Director of Pharmacy

Reports to: Administrator/CEO

Job Summary: The Director of Pharmacy shall serve as the Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) and is expected to
organize daily duties according to order of importance, including delegation of responsibilities to Pharmacy
Technician as appropriate; to maintain departmental records and all required licenses/permits as required by
licensing agencies; to personally provide on-call pharmacy coverage when not on site unless advance
arrangements are made with another pharmacist approved by CCMH; and to attend required meetings and to
ensure Pharmacy Technician is allowed time to attend meeting when required. The Director of Pharmacy is
expected to attend Medical Staff meetings; lead the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee; and to participate
on the Infection Control Committee, Safety Committee, Swing Bed Committee, and any other committee as
needed; to establish and maintain a formulary through the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and Medical
Staff; to prepare a pharmacy work schedule and approve payroll; and to actively participate in the hospital’s
quality improvement program. The Director of Pharmacy is expected to develop and implement departmental
policies and procedures in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations and to review/revise them at
least annually. He or she and will collaborate with Human Resources to interview, select, evaluate, counsel,
commend, or terminate Pharmacy employees according to departmental and hospital policy and will assure a
department orientation process is in place. The Director of Pharmacy is expected to communicate and enforce
hospital and department policies and procedures; to provide in-services for other professionals as needed; to
review patient profiles for drug or food interactions, patient allergies, age and lab related dosage adjustments; to compound and prepare pharmaceutical preparations, including maintaining a unit-dose distribution system and all associated recordkeeping; and to maintain patient profiles that include drug allergies, weights, diagnosis, and medications. The Director of Pharmacy is expected to oversee and check all work done by Pharmacy Technicians, to maintain inventory as needed, and to order, check-in, store, distribute, and oversee all activities concerning controlled medications and maintenance of their records. He or she will oversee all medication storage areas, including the Rural Health Clinic. The Director of Pharmacy is responsible for oversight and appropriate management of all hospital 340b activities.

Minimum Qualifications Required:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from United States accredited pharmacy program
Licensure: Licensed Pharmacist in good standing in the state of Missouri
Previous Experience: Hospital Pharmacist experience preferred

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Ability to work with other health care professionals, basic typing/computer
skills, good communication skills.

Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements:
Working Conditions: Sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and some lifting (up to 20 pounds) are required.
Must work independently and without supervision.
Mental Effort: Must have ability to concentrate amidst interruptions. Multi-tasking skills are needed.
Complex calculations are required at times.
Physical Effort: Sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and some lifting (up to 20 pounds) are required.
Equipment Used: Computer with printer, telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator and Laminar flow IV hood
