Newborn Hospitalists will have an academic appointment within the Division of Hospital Medicine, Department of Pediatrics. They will be employed by University Hospital Medical Group. They will report to the Medical Director, UH Nurseries for their clinical duties and the Division Chief of Hospital Medicine for non-clinical purposes. 

Job Duties

The Newborn Hospitalists will be assigned to work at community hospitals. They will have the following job duties: 

  • Newborn nursery rounds: it is expected that rounds will be completed by 11am, unless the physician has to round on babies in both hospitals.
  • High-risk labor and delivery call, including deliveries in any part of the hospitals.
  • Sick newborn assessment during birth hospitalization.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives for maternal and infant care, including attendance at OB and Pediatric Quality meetings.
  • Labor and Delivery staff education and training, including maintenance of skills through periodic mock codes.
  • Resident education.
  • Collaborate with other hospital departments in delivery of care to newborns, as appropriate.
  • Opportunity for academic pursuits.

Shifts

Shifts will be 24 hours unless internal decision to split shifts is made and approved by the Medical Director. Each 1.0 full-time equivalent will have a target of 122 shifts a year, or approximately 31 shifts a quarter. Shifts in addition to 31 per quarter prorated for FTE status will warrant additional pay.

Qualifications

  • Board certification/eligibility in general pediatrics is required.
  • Experience and competency in caring for sick newborns is required.
  • National Resuscitation Program certification is required.
  • Quality improvement experience preferred.
