This is a full time position located in the Town of Blacksburg, Virgnia. Blacksburg is a diverse and dynamic university town located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia with a population of approximately 44,000. This position oversees division operations of 3 inspectors and 2 permit technicians. The Building Official reports directly to the Director of Planning and Building. A thorough knowledge of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems and building requirements is expected. This position is responsible for reviewing construction plans for residential and commercial projects and/or overseeing 3rd party review, issuance of permits, inspections, preparing reports, investigating complaints and ensuring compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, local codes and ordinances. The Blacksburg Building Official has a history of active participation in the VBCOA organization which would be required of the successful applicant.

The Building Offical must be able to make sound decisions under pressure and handle workload in peak times such as summers with signficant student housing builds. The Town has the ability to augment with external staff during peak times. Successful candidates must have a positive attittude and the ability to work in a collaborative and productive way with the development community, including clients with a variety of levels of construction experience. The Building Official is expected to be a problem solver working within the bounds of the building codes and upholding the Town’s values and standards. A high ethical standard is expected of the Building Official.

This position requires at least five years of building experience in the construction field or any combination of education and experience that would confer equivalent knowledge and ability to perform the job. The selected applicant must have general knowledge of sound engineering practices in respect to design and construction of structures.

The ability to obtain Building Official Certification is required within one year of date of hire. Current CBO status is preferred. A valid Virginia driver’s license with an excellent driving record is required. A satisfactory post- offer, pre-employment criminal background investigation will be required of the selected applicant.

The starting salary range for this position is $59,522 - $80,000 annually, depending upon qualifications. Retirement benefits are provided through the Virginia Retirement System. Direct Deposit of pay is required for all full-time employees.
