Job Summary

Leader and coach for multiple agile teams, typically within an agile program utilizing the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). Guides the use of agile/scrum practices, and helps the teams operate under architectural and portfolio governance, system integration, and system demos. Acts as first line of escalation for the agile team by removing obstacles and mitigating outside distractions. Assesses the agile maturity of the teams they are working with. Collaborates with others outside the team, removes impediments, helps manage risk and drive relentless improvement. Manages team ceremonies and processes. Works with product owners to define priorities, manage product backlog and prepare upcoming sprints. Facilitates discussion, decision-making and conflict resolution. Assists with internal and external communication to improve transparency and information sharing. Regularly provides guidance and training to less experienced scrum masters. Under supervision, may perform the role of Release Train Engineer for smaller scale Agile Release Trains.

Essential Functions

  • Coaches teams on agile and scrum practices to improve team delivery. Creates and maintains an environment of mutual influence, by coaching the team(s) on the application of Lean/Agile practices. Identifies and directs the implementation of process improvements that impact quality. Manages communication by maintaining team-level dashboard reporting to track execution for the team and stakeholders.
  • Facilitates the team’s progress by building a trusting and safe environment where issues can be raised; emphasizing problem-solving, and utilizing strong issue, risk and dependency management. Uses knowledge of budget, spend-through forecasting, team allocations and monitoring to advise team.
  • Assesses the maturity of the team(s), and coaches the team(s) to higher levels of maturity, at a pace that is sustainable and comfortable, while also guiding the team to self-organization.
  • Facilitates team ceremonies, such as backlog refinement, stand-ups, planning meetings and retrospectives. Coordinates with other scrum masters, other non-agile teams, and shared services during Program Increment (PI) Planning events.
  • Works with the Release Train Engineer to ensure the Agile Release Train meets its overall PI objectives. Works with product owners (PO) and product managers to ensure that the team is working on the right priorities. Assists the product owner (PO) in preparing and refining the backlog for PI and Iteration Planning.
  • Mentors and develops less experienced scrum masters.
  • Leverages project management tools and skillsets, when necessary, to assure visibility and successful execution of agile team’s work that may need to leverage traditional project management frameworks.
  • Under supervision, may perform the role of Release Train Engineer for smaller scale Agile Release Trains.

Qualifications
  • Required Bachelor's Degree or equivalent
  • Preferred Master's Degree or equivalent
  • 5 years of relevant experience related experience Required
  • experience with large scale enterprise work Preferred
  • Experience with Agile practices, outside of software development Preferred
  • 1 year of relevant experience with other Agile approaches: (e.g., XP, Kanban, FDD, Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), etc.) Preferred
  • 5 years of relevant experience using Agile best practices, (e.g., burn-down charts, retrospective formats, defect management, user stories, ATDD, TDD, CI/CD, automated testing, etc.) Preferred
  • CRT-ScrumMaster, Certified (CSM) - within 180 Days required
  • CRT-Adv ScrumMaster, Certified - preferred
  • CRT-Project Management Professional (PMP) - PMI Project Management Institute preferred
