Position Purpose/Summary:  Responsible for the application of journeyman skills and knowledge in laying brick, stone, tile and concrete blocks and applying plaster and concrete to alter and repair interiors, exteriors and appurtenances of buildings.  Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with building codes and standard trade practices with inspection during process and upon completion.  Work instructions may be oral or written and are accompanied by sketches or drawings when necessary.  No supervision is exercised over other employees.

Essential Functions:

  • Studies drawings and specifications, lays bricks, stone, concrete blocks, and tile in altering and repairing walls, partitions floors, chimneys, fire boxes, and other structures, prepares mortar, sets bricks, stone, and tile in rows and designs.  Spreads mortar with trowel, checks horizontal and vertical alignment, finishes mortar between blocks, may tear down old masonry structures.
  • Repairs and reconstructs concrete walls, floors, walks, fixtures, and other objects.  Chips away broken or cracked concrete, prepares surface, smoothes concrete over surface with trowel or float, may secure patch with bracing or form.
  • Plasters, stuccos, and repairs walls and ceilings, mixes plaster or stucco, applies and smoothes mixture with trowel, float, darby, and straightedge.  Ships away old plaster or stucco when repairing, may nail wooden grounds in place to guide application of plane surfaces.
  • May lay wooden block, mastic, or asphalt tile floors, waterproof cement, or repair plaster figures and fancy molding.
  • May supervise an assigned helper engaged in semi-skilled and manual tasks related to the trade.
  • Performs related work as required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, equipment, processes, and techniques of the masonry trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Working knowledge of pertinent sections of municipal building codes.
  • Ability to work from written and oral instructions, sketches, and drawings.
  • Ability to supervise the work of an assigned mason tender.
  • Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and materials of the trade.

 

Education and Experience: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of a formal apprenticeship in the masonry trade.
  • Minimum of three years experience as a journeyman mason.

Special Necessary Qualifications:  None

 

Technology, Equipment, Systems, and Tools:  Requires basic computer skills and knowledge of typical craftsmen equipment.

 

Working Conditions:  Work is mostly performed in a field environment.  Regular and punctual attendance is a requirement.

Physical Requirements and Potential Hazards:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear; reach with hands and arms; lift and carry.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
