Job Summary

An integral part of the care leadership team, the Hospital Supervisor has responsibility for coordination and delivery of clinical services activities on their assigned shift. In the absence of the department or facility leadership, is responsible for appropriate use of staff, staffing levels, immediate problem solving, management decision making and maintaining a safe environment by ensuring adherence to safety regulations, policies, and procedures. Provides clinical support / leadership for high-risk patients or unusual situations. Accountable for patient census, observation status and appropriate bed utilization. Communicates with patients, families, and the public to promote positive relations, diffuse problems and address patient/family concerns/issues, consults with Administrator on Call as appropriate. Provides supervision and leadership to hospital staff in collaboration with unit/department level leaders. Facilitates positive change, quality care and appropriate use of resources in a cost-effective and efficient manner. Demonstrates critical thinking, problem resolution, mentoring/education of staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinates the implementation of the plan for the utilization of resources and appropriate admissions / discharges / transfers to maximize available resources, continuity of care and unit budgetary control.
  • Communicates and collaborates with patients/families, all staff, levels of management, physicians, and units and departments regarding patient, staff, and quality care issues. Acts as facilitator or active problem-solver in complex situations as warranted.
  • Uses census and acuity program to ensure adequate staffing levels (as determined by appropriate leadership) in the hospital on all units/departments; adjusts staffing appropriately following established procedures. Maintains fiscal responsibility in managing department needs and reports unusual - unexpected occurrences to the director, administrator on call, Risk Management, etc.
  • Acts as an informational resource to the health care team in matters of interpretation of Hospital policies/procedures/ protocols, risk management, patient safety, patient advocacy, management, and other related areas. Facilitates/supports the change process. Ensures key leadership is communicated to appropriately. Demonstrates critical thinking skills, problem resolution abilities, mentoring/education of staff.
  • Provides supervision, direction, and support to all in-house staff to ensure effectiveness and efficiency of services. Communicates performance issues and concerns to unit/department leadership and follows through with in-the-moment opportunities for performance enhancement.
  • Rounds throughout the facility maintaining knowledge of organizational information and changes. Maintains an awareness of high-risk patients/situations and serves as a clinical resource to support the care. Facilitates communication of concerns through the Help Chain of Command and follows up to assure that clinical concerns have been addressed.
  • Acts as resource for staff to identify and address ethical issues within nursing and assigned area. Formulates decisions and actions based on ethical principles, using the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide practice. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality, and security of patient, staff, and organization data.
  • Activates contingency plans (such as Disaster, patient placement with census fluctuations, etc.) in collaboration with the Director, Chief Nursing Officer, and the Administrator on call.

Qualifications- Required

  • Bachelor's Degree Nursing (BSN)
  • 2 years of relevant related nursing experience
  • LIC-Registered Nurse (RN) - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire

Certifications required within 90 days of hire:

  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association Or CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross

Certifications required within 180 days of hire:

  • CRT-Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - AHA American Heart Association
  • CRT-Pediatric Adv Life Support (PALS) - AHA American Heart Association
  • CRT-Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - AHA American Heart Association

Qualifications- Preferred

  • ​Master's Degree MS, MSN, MBS, MM, MHA, MPH or other related
  • 2 years of relevant recent leadership (i.e., Charge Nurse, Shared Leadership position, Magnet Champion, QSO)
