The Hartford Central School District is located in Washington County, in eastern upstate New York. It serves students from the towns of Fort Edward, Fort Ann, Salem, Argyle, Hebron, Granville, and Hartford. The district features the Floyd Harwood Elementary School and the Hartford Middle/High school. Per the 2010 census, the town of Hartford's population is 2,269.

From the first school records dating back to about 1813, Hartford had several numbered districts scattered throughout the town. This was until 1930, when the citizens of Hartford voted to buy the land of the present school, and Hartford School became centralized.  In 1933, the voters approved the new building, and in 1936 the cornerstone was laid and the building was first occupied in 1937.
