This position is responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment at Cedar Hills Landfills and the 7 closed landfills around King County.  This position will assist with the spreading, loading, compacting and digging in solid waste and soils in an efficient, productive and safe manner.

SELECTION PROCESS:  The applications will be screened for clarity, completeness and required qualifications.  Applicants rated the most competitive will be invited to a skills test & may be selected for a panel interview thereafter.

WORK LOCATION:  The primary work locations for this position is the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill, 16645 228th Ave., SE. Maple Valley, WA.

WORK SCHEDULE:  This position's shifts/work schedule may vary depending on shift bids and operational needs.  Scheduled work shifts include 5/8 and 4/10.

OPERATIONS SECTION PROFILE:  The operations section of the Solid Waste Division operates a solid waste transfer and disposal system for residents and businesses in King County (except for Seattle).  The operations section is responsible for the transfer facilities, transportation, maintenance shop (maintaining the division's heavy equipment, vehicles and facilities), landfill operations, landfill gas and wastewater.  Commercial garbage collection companies and self-haulers (business and residential) bring solid waste to the transfer facilities, where it is located into large transfer trailers and hauled to the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill for disposal.  At the landfill, a network of environmental controls ensures the by-products of the decomposing waste are captured and managed.

EXAMPLES OF JOB DUTIES:
• Operate a large dozer D-9 or similar in grading, excavating, and back-filling.
• Operate a refuse compactor at the County landfill site.
• Operate a push/pull scraper of twenty-five yards covering compacted solid waste and excavating and moving soil.
• Operate other equipment such as sweepers, slope mowers, cranes, front-end loaders and graders.
• Apply knowledge of driving laws and proper use of equipment, road building materials, basic survey principles, construction safety principles, and environmental regulations related to landfill work.
• Respond to on-site accidents, emergencies, and hazardous spills to assess immediate concerns and possible equipment use.
• Monitor, control and direct activities at job site; control flow and sequence of truck dumping, direct customers to appropriate areas.
• Identify potentially hazardous or unacceptable materials at job site and coordinate proper disposal.
• Perform visual safety inspection of vehicle; checking fluid levels and tire pressure, refueling vehicles, maintain vehicle cleanliness and perform pre-trip inspections.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
• Minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated recent experience safely operating heavy equipment such as:
o Large Dozer D-9
o Back-Hoe
o Push/Pull Scraper
o Refuse Compactor
o Sweepers
o Slope Mowers
o Front-end Loaders
o Graders
• Demonstrated application of safety procedures with operating heavy equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to identify potential on-site hazards
• Ability to respond to on-site safety situations
• Ability to work in a team and independently
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills

THE MOST COMPETITIVE CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS:  The most competitive candidates will have experience in landfill construction and maintenance.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Valid Washington State Driver's License upon hire
• Valid Washington State Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License upon hire
• Current Washington State Department of Transportation Medical Card
• Candidate must be able to work on heavy equipment and machinery on uneven slopes, surfaces, grades and terrain in heat/cold, wet/humid, inclement weather and other adverse conditions such as odor, high volume noise, dust and heavy traffic.

This position is defined as safety sensitive and as such, the selected candidate will be required to undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment and, subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow up testing.  The selected candidate will be required to pass a physical examination.
