Job Description:

A Community/Outreach Counselor (Success Coach) provides support to student populations that may be at risk for degree completion. Counselors will develop workshops, conduct group sessions and ultimately work toward increasing rates of completion.  The community/outreach counselor (Success Coach) Particular population of focus are students who withdraw from the institution to determine reasons that may be elusive.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct weekly email and phone outreach to an assigned caseload of students in order to develop academic success plans with assigned students.
  • Reviews academic reports to evaluate progress of assigned student cohort; refers students to appropriate support services and resources.
  • Meet with students individually and in groups to assist with academic success strategies; assess skills and interests, and customize support and services to meet their needs.
  • Maintain accurate and timely student records and provide a bi-monthly status reports including an overview of students served and engagement data.
  • Provides registration assistance during peak registration periods.
  • Participates in enrollment management related activities and events, including but not limited to new student orientation, welcome week, etc.
  • Serves as liaison with the financial aid office and admissions office.
  • Serve as a direct connection and liaison for students participating in the Male Initiative for Leadership and Education (MILE) program, Lead: Female Leadership and Mentoring Program, and TRIO Student Support Services.
  • Coordinates/facilitates workshops, training and educational activities in collaboration with MILE, Lead and TRIO in support of student success.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of trainings and workshops for tutors and supplemental instructors.
  • Performs administrative tasks associated with department activities (i.e. -recommendation letters, workshop materials, student surveys, reports, forms, and general correspondence; receives or refers to student records, academic reports, early alerts, curriculum, catalogs, policies, manuals, and reference materials; operates a computer and utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, or other software programs including ARIES: Student self-service and Retention Early Alert).
  • Maintains professional knowledge in applicable areas (i.e. - maintains a working knowledge of assigned area; researches new trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends conferences, workshops, and training sessions).
  • Performs miscellaneous tasks (i.e. - schedules student appointments; answers telephone calls; types forms/documents; copies documents; file documentation; and processes outgoing mail).
  • Interacts with various departments, agencies, individuals (i.e. - attends meetings and serves on committees; communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, students, faculty members, community organizations, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals to coordinate activities, review status of work, and exchange information).
  • Participate in college, division, and department meetings, events and training as recommended and approved by supervisor. 
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, college committees, work groups, task forces, and other professional organizations as approved by supervisor.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those listed above which do not alter the basic level of the position.   


Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, or closely related field; with two (2) years experience and/or training involving career counseling, academic advising, and personal computer operations; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to build rapport and meaningful relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Ability to work well with diverse and underrepresented student populations.
  • Encompass creative problem solving capabilities.
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA regulations.
  • Knowledge of the STCC enrollment process, academic requirements and other aspects of campus-life that affect students' persistence.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

Works in an office setting. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work   Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.  This person needs to move about inside the office to access office machinery.  Constantly operates a computer and other equipment i.e. copier.  This person frequently communicates with students, faculty and staff.  Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
