SALARY CLASSIFICATION

CONTROL/ASSIGNMENT
Under the direction of the Transportation Supervisor is responsible for the overall mechanical condition and safety of operation of all district maintained vehicles.  Responsible for supervising subordinate personnel as may be assigned.
DUTIES
Insures safe operating condition of all district maintained vehicles.  Performs preventative maintenance on district maintained vehicles and motor powered and/or wheeled equpment.  Performs all mechanical work required on district maintained vehicles and motor powered and/or wheeled equipment.  Keeps records of all parts, repairs and services done on vehicles and equipment as required by motor carrier safety operations.  Maintains a neat and orderly mechanic shop.  Is responsible for insuring all brake inspections, mainteanance, service or repairs to any commercial motor vehicle in the district fleet  andmeet all applicable federal standards.  (Federal Highway Administration-Department of Transporation 396.25).  Performs duties as assigned pertaining to civic center program and other dutie as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Shall have a minimum of three (3) years mechanic experience or educational equivalent.  Shall have demonstrated knowledge in the operation and maintenance of wheeled gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.  Shall have demonstrated a knowledge of vehicle maintenance shop operations to parts and cost control.  Must meet one or more of the following U.S. Department of Transporation requirements for brake inspector:
1.  Has successfully completed a State, Federal, Canadian, or labor union sponsored apprenticeship or training program which qualifies you to perform brake service and/or inspections.
2.  Has completed one year of brake-related training and/or experience in brake or vehicle manufacturer or similar commercial training program designed to train in brake maintenance and/or inspection.
3.  Has at least one year of experience performing brake maintenance and/or inspection similar to assigned duties at a commercial garage, fleet leasing company, or similar faciltiy.

Must have a valid California Drivers License, a valid Commercial Drivers License and current medical card.  must pass a physical examination and T.B. test prior to actual employment, to insure capability to perform assigned tasks, including no history of reoccurring back problems.  Must be able to lift seventy (70) pounds.  Must have exhibited regular and punctual attendance in previous employment or job assignment.  Shall not have been convicted of a felony.
