Description of Work

A Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) Shift Lead is a professional level employee in the Muskegon County Juvenile Detention Center. The JDC Shift Lead performs a variety of duties related to direct care of lodged youth and acts as the shift lead of the facility. Key performance measures include providing for the daily care, support, and supervision of Juvenile Detention Officers (JDO) and youth of the Juvenile Detention Center.

Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications

1.  Have completed sixty (60) semester hours of college level coursework from an accredited college or university (or equivalent quarter hours) in Social Sciences or related Human Services field; AND Have a minimum of one (1) year of full-time paid work experience in a juvenile facility or child caring institution as a direct care worker.
2.  Possess a valid Michigan driver's license.

Physical Conditions / Work Location

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

Employees in this class should be in good physical condition to withstand confrontation with clients, and may be required to move or lift children weighing in excess of one hundred (100) pounds.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Employees in the class generally work at the Juvenile Detention Center. Travel may be required.

EVALUATION CONTENT
The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a County appointed physician before the first day of employment.  An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test.  Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check.  Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the County system.  For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications.  This list remains in effect for three months unless exhausted or extended.
