Summary

The Director of Risk Management assesses,plans, implements, and directs the risk management activities for theorganization.  

EssentialDuties and Responsibilities

These duties and responsibilities describedbelow represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks maybe assigned.

·        Develops system-wide risk managementobjectives through effective collaboration with 

organizational leaders

·        Establishes and implementsprocedures to decrease risk and liability of organization

·        Designs risk management strategies,with the assistance of department leaders, in their appropriate departments

·        Follows trends in risk managementindustry, and collects and analyzes risk management data as required, to advise executive team ofnew developments in liability or risk

·        Designs, implements, and maintains organizational systems for claimsmanagement and occurrence reporting with the goal of reducing claims, occurrencesand the associated liability

·        Reviews claims or potential claims related to professional and generalliability, analyzes actual and potential risk, assess liability and probabilityof legal action and collaborates with legal counsel

·        Assists in processing summons and complaints served on present andprevious employees

·        Interacts with executive team and legal counsel to respond to claims orissues to facilitate settlement at an early stage

·        Works to resolve complaints/issues to mitigate professional liabilityclaims

·        May negotiate settlement of small claims within administrative authority 

·        Provides follow-up and takes appropriate steps to ensure risks areminimized on all identified regulatory/insurance survey reportsrecommendations/deficiencies

·        Receives and manages information on event occurrences; reviews forpotential liability; ensures immediate investigation and follow-up of seriousoccurrences and sentinel events with participation at the level appropriate tothe event

·        Plans and coordinates the organization's insurance coverage againstliability and casualty loss, budgeting for payment of deductibles, riskretention, coinsurance

·        Participates with management in reviews of insurance coverage and relatedissues

·        Collaborates with insurance carriers regarding claims, applications, andon-going communication

·        Provides assistance in gathering information regarding claims or claimshistory

·        Coordinates with hospital legal counsel to coordinate the investigation,processing  and defense of claims againstthe hospital

·        Assists with professional liability and hospital liability questions presentedby hospital staff and medical staff

·        Presents in-services and routine orientation for employees and medicalstaff regarding healthcare risk management and related subjects to enhanceawareness of their role in reducing liability exposures and for reportingoccurrences.

Educationand Experience

Minimum Required Education:  MSN     

Preferred Education:  JD

Experience:  Minimumof 5 years of progressive risk management experience required.

Certificates,Licenses, Registrations

Mustbe RN with current license in the state of Virginia or a compact state.  Currently licensed attorney for the state ofVirginia preferred.
