General Definition of Work

Performs difficult technical work conducting research, compiling information, preparing draft pleadings, contracts, deeds and easements, preparing and maintaining files and records, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Town Attorney.

Essential Functions

Essential Functions
Serves as law office administrator; administers collection of delinquent accounts; manages claims against the Town.
Drafts ordinances and resolutions; prepares easements and deeds, legal documents; prepares or drafts correspondence and memoranda. Good writing skills and attention to detail are essential.
Updates Town code.
Oversees bankruptcy filings.
Works cooperatively with the Town Clerk to coordinate Town Council packet materials.
Maintains law library.
Tracks legislation; performs legal research; performs title examinations.
Prepares annual operating budget and monitors expenditures.
Establishes and maintains records management system.
Assigns all resolution and ordinance numbers and maintains log of all ordinances and their disposition.
Provides assistance and information to citizens.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of legal office practices and procedures; skill using Microsoft Office with a focus on Microsoft Works; knowledge of departmental functions, organization and policies; knowledge of the, methods and practices utilized in legal research; general knowledge of municipal law; ability to maintain office and legal records digitally; ability to organize and perform work independently; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town officials and employee; and good customer service skills

Education and Experience
Associates degree with coursework in paralegal studies or related field and considerable experience working in a law related position, or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Special Requirements
Paralegal Certification within eighteen months of employment.

Physical Requirements

This work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires walking; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a quiet location (e.g. library, private offices).
