ABOUT THE POSITION: Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention (DAJD), in partnership with Seattle & King County Public Health, is accepting applications for Short-Term Temporary Registered Nurses who have an interest working with our Community's youth in a detention setting. Three (3) Short-Term Temporary Registered Nurse positions will be filled from the list resulting from this recruitment.

Individuals that fill short-term temporary positions are employees that are not eligible for benefits and do not gain status in the regular career service. Short-term temporary employees are only approved to work a total of 910 hours in a calendar year.

SUMMARY OF PRACTICE: Working in a detention setting is a highly specialized field within nursing that involves caring for the medical needs of juveniles.  Nurses operate their practice within the detention centers and perform many of the same tasks as nursing professionals who work in traditional medical settings.  They strive to provide compassionate and competent health care to the vulnerable populations of the county through assessing, diagnosing and treating a variety of medical conditions.  Detention nurses have more autonomy than other nursing specialties since the work environment consists of a compact staff and accessibility to fewer resources.

Job Duties

  • Provide nursing assessments and interventions including; medical, dental and psychiatric screening and triage with patients; obtain health history, chief complaint; conduct drug and alcohol withdrawal assessments; patient care planning; evaluation and medical care coordination; carry out prescribed treatments; collect specimens as needed; administer medications and vaccinations; monitor and document treatment progress and patient response.
  • Provide mental health services, as a member of an interdisciplinary team, to patients with emotional, behavioral, cognitive and social impairments.
  • Refer to or consult with other health providers in person and on the phone.
  • Follow established Public Health medical records policies and procedures and the State and Federal laws that govern the release of health care information.
  • Establish relationships with individuals to promote interactive problem solving and provide patient education.
  • Delegate as allowed under the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Participate and assist in the training and orientation of new health care employees and students.
  • Provide for clinic maintenance of supplies and equipment; maintains a safe environment according to standards of (OSHA/WISHA).
  • Provide patient care based upon practice guidelines, community standards of care, and Federal and State laws and regulations.
  • Respond to emergencies throughout the facility; injury and illness; performs CPR when needed.
  • Maintain professional competence by pursuing opportunities for continuous learning, attending continuing education offerings, reading professional literature, and engaging in other activities which develop new knowledge and skills.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An active and unencumbered Washington State Registered Nurse license in good standing.
  • Associate's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing, or equivalent.
  • Documentation of current BLS-CPR for Health Care Providers. CPR/AED  Heartsaver courses do not meet this requirement.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting physical and mental health assessments.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate appropriate crisis intervention and emergency response.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain professional working relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and cultures.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage clients in a care plan.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes.
  • Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office Suite and web-based enabled tools.
  • Willing to provide options counseling

MOST COMPETITIVE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working in a correctional or locked facility.
  • Experience in ER, Psych, Med-Surg, Ambulatory Care or Substance Abuse.
  • Experience working with adolescents.
  • One (1) year or more of nursing experience in a relevant area.
  • Bilingual
NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
  • An offer of short –term temporary employment will be contingent on passing a pre-employment physical exam (should be able to lift 25 pounds, move quickly up and down stairs, and crouch/bend to perform CPR).
  • Employees are required to protect the privacy and security of protected health information as defined in State and Federal Law.
  • Employees are required to adhere to OSHA/WISHA guidelines including but not limited to completing their mandatory trainings on time.

WORK LOCATION: King County Juvenile Detention Center, 1211 E. Alder, Seattle, WA, 98122. The individuals selected for these short-term temporary positions will work within the secure perimeter of the juvenile detention facility.

WORK SCHEDULE: At this time, short-term temporary positions cover day and evening shifts, when needed, but may work outside of those times. Day shift is between the hours of 0700 to 1500 and evening shift is between the hours of 1500-2300.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The individuals selected for these positions will be required to complete a thorough background investigation process, including fingerprinting, criminal history check, medical physical, and reference checks. A valid Washington State Driver's License or alternate ability to travel around the county is required by time of hire.

The individuals hired into these positions will be required to adhere to the policies of the Department of Juvenile and Adult Detention (in addition to those of the Public Health Department) in meeting and maintaining the standards required for continued access to the facility as well as other standards related to conduct.

Staff may be required to play an active role in the event of a public health emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.
