Job Title: Nurse

Reports to: Office Manager, or the Assistant Office Manager in the absence of the Office Manager for administrative purposes, and to the Physician for clinical purposes.

General Statement of Duties: Provides professional nursing care for patients following established standards and practices

Primary Job Responsibilities: (this list may not include all of the duties assigned)

  1. Performs medical and administrative duties per office policy.
  2. Provides basic patient care as ordered. Administers prescribed medications and treatment as directed.
  3. Gives vaccine or other injections as required.
  4. Dispenses medications as directed by providers.
  5. Observes, records and reports patient’s condition and reaction to drugs and treatment to providers per office policy.
  6. Documents care provided or procedures performed accurately on patient records.
  7. Submits necessary paperwork for patient testing, admissions and referral as requested by provider.
  8. Responsible for doing prior authorizations for tests and medications.
  9. Responsible for filling out any patient forms or paperwork.
  10. Evaluates patients in the office to determine emergency situations or to determine priority.
  11. Responsible for phone triage per office policy. Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions. Documents phone calls in patient record accurately and completely.
  12. Screens all patient calls for the providers, calling back to get additional information and determining who needs to handle the phone call.
  13. Follows up on newborn papers from the hospitals, as well as hospital hearing screens and state newborn screens.
  14. Maintains and reviews patient records for lab test and imaging results. Posts results to the patients record and informs provider of all results per office policy.
  15. Reviews patient records to assure patient has followed up on referrals. Follows up with patient or specialist to obtain any missing information. Informs provider according to office policy.
  16. Responsible for learning receptionist and medical assistant jobs as needed or required
  17. Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional license.
  18. Participates in quality improvement.
  19. Attends required meetings and in-services, including lab or OSHA updates. Also participates in annual staff training, including but not limited to health literacy and cultural competency.
  20. Adheres to infection control/safety guidelines.
  21. Maintains patient confidentiality.
  22. Performs other related duties as directed or required.

EDUCATION: Graduation of an accredited school of nursing.

EXPERIENCE: Prefer one year of professional nursing experience in a clinic setting with specific training in pediatrics or child-related field.

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE: Possession of an Ohio State Registered Nurse license. CPR Certification.

ALTERNATIVE TO MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: None

KNOWLEDGE:

  1. Knowledge of computer systems used to perform the job and appropriately chart in the medical record. Understanding of documentation standards.
  2. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology. Familiarity with health care systems, regulations, policies and functions.
  3. Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care.
  4. Knowledge of medical equipment, supplies and materials needed to administer patient care.
  5. Knowledge of medications and their effects on patients.
  6. Knowledge of policies and procedures related to infection control, environmental safety and patient confidentiality.

SKILLS:

  1. Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide patient care.
  2. Skill in prioritizing urgency of a situation and determining what needs to be handled first.
  3. Skill in reading and following written and oral medical orders.
  4. Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions.
  5. Skill in initiating appropriate emergency procedures.
  6. Skill in handling a number of tasks simultaneously.
  7. Skill in appropriate use of universal precautions, safe workplace and confidentiality.
  8. Skill in maintaining effective working relationship with patients, staff and the public.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Varied activities including standing, walking, reaching, bending and lifting. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Must be able to use a variety of office equipment. Requires working under stressful conditions, or working irregular hours. Requires exposure to communicable disease and body fluids.

ENVIRONMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a pediatrics practice.
