Help improve the lives of Homewood’s youth and become an agent of community change by serving as an AmeriCorps member.

Homewood Children’s Village AmeriCorps is a 10-month service program where AmeriCorps members are placed in education settings with youth in Homewood. AmeriCorps members provide academic support to students, ranging from K-12, and connect them with engaging activities after-school. The presence of AmeriCorps Members within our schools, out-of-school-time programs, and in the community, helps provide positive social reinforcement for students, increases engagement with learning, and connects children and families to programs and supports in the community. HCV AmeriCorps is a partnership between Homewood Children’s Village, PennSERVE, and the Pittsburgh Public School district.

Program Components

Quarter-Time Paid Education Placement

Members serve a total of 1200 hours in an educational school setting 4.5 days a week, where they support students in increasing math and reading literacy. Members develop new skills, learn the day-to-day operations of primary education environments, expand their professional networks, and increase their understanding of the issues that their communities are facing.

Leadership Development Training

Weekly training sessions, delivered by active community leaders and subject matter experts.

Team Service Projects

HCV AmeriCorps members will work as a team to focus on a school-wide challenge, explore resources, and collaborate with school staff and local partners. Together they will develop and implement a long-term service project to be carried out during the program year.

Professional Development Coaching (Mentorship)

Each Member works with a staff member or partner from a local organization to identify post-program education and/or employment goals. Members and coaches meet regularly to determine appropriate strategies and track progress.
