Responsible for but not limited to food preparation, packaging, and clean-up of menu items for the Horizons meal programs. All work shall be done in accordance with Iowa Public Health and Safety codes and with any policies and procedures of Horizons and the Meals on Wheels program. 

Position Responsibilities:

1. Assists with preparation of cold food, dessert, special diets, and working ahead to ensure items are ready for packing in coolers when needed.

2. Assists with hot food production working ahead to ensure timely hot meals.

3. Assist with preparation and presentation of food for events. 

4. Assists with Lunch Club from preparation through clean-up.

5. Staff events as needed in cooperation with Breakfast Bag and Kitchen Manager.

6. Document production details and quantities and assist kitchen manager with inventory requirements.

7. Participate in menu planning as needed with Kitchen Manager.

8. Foster a team approach by assisting other Meals on Wheels staff with tasks as needed and expressing a positive, cooperative attitude.

9. Identify and continuously clean kitchen facilities on a daily and weekly basis.

5. Actively, assertively, and thoughtfully participates in staff meetings on a regular basis, as scheduled by the supervisor.

6. Includes volunteers in department and job function.

Education and Experience:

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be able to read and write. Preferred 3 to 5 years’ experience preferred in food service with some large batch cooking

Supervision Requirements:

  • The Cook position is supervised by the Kitchen Manager. Assisting with the direction of volunteers is a possibility for this role.

Hours and Schedule Expectations:

Hours for this position are 6:30am- 2:30pm Monday- Friday.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to calculate and adjust recipes to fit needs. Be able to lift at least 40 lbs safely and stand and walk for long periods of time. Willingness to learn all jobs within the kitchen.
  • This position is a mandatory abuse reporter and must be re-certified every five years. 
  • Must acquire Safe Serve Certification.

Qualifications:

1. Must provide vehicle for own transportation.

2. Must possess a valid Iowa driver’s license.

3. Must possess valid auto insurance.

4. Must supply all needed records

5. Must be able to be certified as not having been involved in abuse to children or adults.

6. Must be able to be certified as not having been involved in criminal activity.
