Summary: 


Provides neurophysiologic monitoring in the operating room that helps in the assessment of functional integrity of the peripheral and/or central nervous system during vascular, orthopedic, urologic, or neurosurgical operative procedures. Intraoperative monitoring procedures recorded include, but are not limited to, electroencephalograph (EEG), evoked potential, electromyogram motor mapping, compressed spectral array, and electrocorticograpy. Monitors data output and maintains appropriate documentation. In addition, conducts electroencephalograph (EEG) examinations, evoked potential evaluations and collects information pertinent to the interpretation of the test on infants through adult patients both inpatient and outpatient arena. Responsibilities:


Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Testing and Evoked Potentials (EP)
1. Prepares patient for testing, explains procedures and answers questions.
2. Assesses patient condition, identifies appropriate monitoring parameters, lead application method, and precautionary measures to be used.
3. Calibrates equipment and operates equipment pre/intra/post operatively.
4. Identifies, localizes, and corrects recording instrument malfunction.
5. Obtains baseline waveform analysis and performs pre and post induction and pre and post positioning.
6. Informs attending personnel of waveform changes, variations, deviations from baseline or previous acquired data trials.
7. Ensures safety of patient through monitoring of electrical safety and implications of electrode application, i.e. use of collodion, acetone, needle electrodes in an operating room environment. Maintains safety standards for patient care and equipment.
8. Monitors data output to identify normal/abnormal neuroconduction patterns and stages. Monitors neuromonitoring by verifying readouts, performing integrity checks, etc. Records appropriate information regarding tests to include patient physiological changes and behaviors.
9. Records technical comments supplied to operating room personnel regarding waveform appearance into patient log.
10. Provides supporting samples of waveform description and printouts for baseline, intraoperative, and post- operative periods.
11. Helps to maintain inventory of all supplies necessary to conduct evoked potential neuromonitoring.

Electroencephalograph (EEG)
1. Under the direct supervision of the professional staff, conducts EEG examinations and collects information pertinent to the interpretation of the test.
2. Acquires basic knowledge of normal brain anatomy and function disease states encountered in EEG practice, electrical patterns of the brain in normal and pathological circumstances, other diagnostic aids and operating principles of pertinent electronic instrumentation.
3. Abstracts relevant information from the patient's clinical record and obtains additional information by questioning.
4. May perform these tests in the laboratory, at the patient’s bedside and in the Intensive Care Units.
5. Assists in the maintenance of EEG equipment and supplies.

Nerve Conduction (NCV) Neurodiagnostic Studies
1. Under the direct supervision of the professional staff, conducts NCV examinations and collects information pertinent to the interpretation of the test.
2. Acquires basic knowledge of normal brain anatomy, the peripheral nervous system and function disease states encountered in NCV/EMG practice.

Miscellaneous
1. Keeps equipment in a clean operating condition, detects instrument malfunctions and makes minor maintenance adjustments or reports need for major repairs.
2. Completes charting and billing, as required within the EMR daily.
3. Will be responsible to participate in taking calls as part of a rotation.


 

Qualifications:


Required:
Graduate of an accredited Electroneurodiagnostic (END) training program.

Students may be considered if actively enrolled in an accredited END training program, are in good academic standing, have completed 2 clinical rotations, and successfully complete the program within 12 months of hire.

Certified by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologist (ABRET) in EEG or obtains within two years of hire/job date.

Possesses one or more of the following or obtains within three years of the hire/job date:
• Certification in Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring (CNIM) by ABRET, or
• Certification with nerve conduction velocity (NCV) by American Association of Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists (AAET) and/or American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM)

Maintains ongoing continuing education as required to maintain registries. Participates in departmental in-service educational opportunities.


Physical Demands:
May need to move around intermittently during the day, including sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and ambulating.
May need to remain still for extended periods, including sitting and standing.
Ability to communicate in face-to-face, phone, email, and other communications.
Ability to read job related documents.
Ability to use computer.
