GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This posting is for the fulfillment of a Motor Equipment Operator I or a Motor Equipment Operator II position. The position will be filled as either a Motor Equipment Operator I or II contingent on the selected candidates' work experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and qualifications. 

Motor Equipment Operator I General Statement of Duties:

Performs routine work in operating motorized equipment and manual skilled and semi-skilled labor such as laying out and marking fields for various sports, carpentry, painting and masonry repairs. Performs other duties as assigned.

Motor Equipment Operator II General Statement of Duties:

Performs responsible work in the safe operation of several types of heavy or special purpose motorized equipment. Services and makes minor repairs to the equipment and performs various manual tasks when not operating equipment. Must have a higher level of skill than MEO I in order to operate more complicated pieces of heavy motor equipment. Calculates and makes adjustments to equipment in order to properly perform assignments, i.e. calibrate seeders to dispense the proper amount of seed. May also lead a work crew towards completion of set weekly work schedules. Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Motor Equipment Operator I:

  • Operates trucks, trailers, and other medium to large equipment used to maintain facilities, parks and grounds
  • Operates a variety of equipment used by the County for maintenance and construction
  • Operates power mowers, weed-eaters, chippers and related equipment used to maintain facilities, parks, and grounds
  • Operates a large capacity mower and tractors with implements
  • When not operating equipment, performs manual tasks related to the operation of the equipment
  • Operates electric and gas-powered tools such as saws, drills, tampers and wrenches
  • Applies seed, fertilizer, and other turf amendments
  • Performs routine driver maintenance using checklists
  • Performs manual tasks of routine park maintenance and game preparation for sport fields
  • Performs skilled tasks and labor in the construction and maintenance of pavilions, playgrounds, hardscapes , or other related park improvements
  • Performs snow removal related tasks and is subject to 24 hour on call for snow removal or standby for county declared emergencies

 Non-Essential Job Functions:

  • May perform worksite supervision of temporary workers
  • May service and make minor repairs to equipment
  • Assists in loading and unloading transported material and equipment

 Motor Equipment Operator II:

  • Operates a dump truck, bulldozer, backhoe, motor grader, and other large rental equipment
  • When not operating heavy equipment, operates lighter equipment such as skid-steer loaders, mowers, and chippers.
  • Operates a multi-deck mowing tractor and agricultural tractors with multiple attachments.
  • Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • May supervise or assist in supervising temporary employees or inmate work crews.
  • May supervise a work crew on weekly work schedule, as assigned.
  • Provides information to foreman or other supervisor about employee performance.
  • Enforces proper safety procedures.
  • Applies fertilizers, weed killers and other compounds.
  • Performs a variety of related manual tasks when not operating motor equipment.
  • Assists in loading and unloading transported material and equipment

REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES

Motor Equipment Operator I:

Education:

Preferred:  High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

Required:  Some experience in the operation of motorized equipment.

Certifications/ Licenses Required:  

Good driving record and ability to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license with an air brake certification within first 6 months of employment.

Subject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results. Following a conditional offer of employment, must pass a post offer physical examination.  Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May perform worksite supervision of temporary workers

Motor Equipment Operator II:

Education:

Required:  High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:        

Required: Considerable experience in the operation of motorized equipment, at the level of a Motor Equipment Operator I.

Preferred: Experience involving heavy duty special purpose equipment.

Certifications/ Licenses:

Required: Class A Commercial driver’s license with air brake certification and good driving record. Acquire a Registered Technician Certificate within in the first 6 months to apply regulated agricultural products.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of safety rules and regulations and the principles and practices of safely operating and servicing heavy construction and maintenance equipment, such as heavy-duty trucks, bulldozers and backhoes
  • Thorough knowledge of safety and traffic rules and regulations
  • Ability to operate several types of light to heavy motorized equipment
  • Working agricultural knowledge to prepare soils for applications and apply seeds, fertilizers, herbicides, and fungicides.
  • Ability to make adjustments and minor repairs to equipment
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions

Additional Requirements

Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description. Subject to twenty-four (24) hour call, and works varied shifts as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities      

Provides immediate direction to work crews on site as assigned
