Job Description

Reporting to an Associate Director for Residence Life, the Assistant Director for Residence Life is a champion for student learning; provides leadership and coordination for a residential area; plans and coordinates major departmental initiatives; and participates on the Housing & Residence Life Leadership Team and the Residence Life Leadership Team.

Core Responsibilities:
*Champion the Division of Student Affairs Aspirations for Student Learning through enacting ExperienceVT initiatives in the residential setting through the lens of student engagement, wellness and housing services.
*Provide leadership, vision, development and coordination for a residential area housing approximately 4,000 –5,000 undergraduate and graduate students who live in a variety of housing facilities including traditional, suite-style, co-ed, and single-gender.
*Responsible for implementing the mission, values, and goals of Housing and Residence Life within the area of responsibility.
*Provide ongoing supervision, training and mentorship, to full-time professional Residential Learning Coordinators, Assistant Residential Learning Coordinators (Graduate Assistants), and indirectly supervise residence hall student staff members, emphasizing the tenets of a learning organization model.
*Cultivate the development of professional and para-professional staff through an area model focused on team, professional and personal development integration. Provide vision and leadership to area through weekly meetings and supervision. Create and implement team-developed vision for residential area.
*Provide leadership for the design and implementation of a major departmental and divisional initiatives, committees, and workgroups that are determined annually.
*Advise a housing student organization such as Residence Hall Federation or National Residence Hall Honorary.
*Coordinate needed administrative process that impacts resident students, resident staff and stakeholders including but not limited to move-in and move out, break housing, health and safety inspections and coordinator training and development.
*Support, enforce and ensure compliance with all University and departmental policies and regulations.
*Partner with the Office of Student Conduct through advising coordinators in student conduct adjudication, providing referrals and Maxient dashboard management to ensure timely completion of conduct processes. Assist as a conduct hearing officer as needed.
*Work with Housing Services staff regarding administrative process in residence halls and utilization of StarRez database.; oversee occupancy and damage billing process.
*Demonstrate and uphold the Virginia Tech Principles of Community and the values of InclusiveVT; foster a supportive and challenging multicultural environment through staff selection, training, community programming, and interpersonal contact with students and colleagues.
*Builds strategic relationship with campus partners including but not limited to Residential Housekeeping, Facilities, Dean of Students, Title IX, Virginia Tech Police, Living Learning Programs, Cook Counseling and the Office of Learning Partnerships.
*Oversee behavioral and crisis management process for residential student experience. Providing appropriate support, mediation and referral for individual students and staff when needed.
*Serve on emergency response duty rotation schedule for campus of 10,000 residents; assist with protocol training and review for direct reports who serve in emergency response duty.
*Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

-Masters Degree in student affairs/higher education or related field.
-Ability to work with a diverse student body, foster sensitivity to diversity issues in the university community.
-Demonstrates a commitment to a socially just learning environment.
-Ability to display an understanding of developmental needs of undergraduate and graduate students.
-Demonstrated experience related to college student development.
-Demonstrated ability in staff supervision and administrative work.
-Experience in selection, training, organization advising, development, organization and/or planning.
-Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

-Prior work experience in a live-in housing role.
-Has three or more years of professional experience, including supervision, training and community development
-Demonstrates initiative and ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team.
-Collaborative, collegial leadership style.
-Experience or knowledge of engaging students in meaningful co-curricular learning experiences.
-Experience in the areas of student organization advising; crisis management and emergency response, budget development and management; strategic planning; training program development.
-Experience with resolving conflict, team development, group dynamics and critical thinking.
-Values partnerships and engagement in the student learning process
