Postgraduate Resident (Postdoctoral or Post-Master's) Counseling & Psychological Services Full-time, Administrative and Professional Faculty, Exempt Position #GA339 

Longwood University is an institution of higher learning dedicated to the development of citizen leaders who are prepared to make positive contributions to the common good of society. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), a valued unit within Student Affairs and accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services, is accepting applications for a 10-month post-graduate residency position for the 2018-19 academic year with possibility of renewal dependent upon funding, job performance, and department needs and priorities. The residency punctuates the final year of pre-licensed training by offering diverse clinical opportunities meant to solidify and enhance skills necessary for successfully functioning as a provider in a university counseling center environment. While there are required activities (individual counseling, group counseling, initial consultations, outreach, and after-hours emergency coverage), the postgraduate experience affords the opportunity to develop advanced skills and knowledge in an area of professional interest with a mentor. 

The majority of the advanced mental health resident's time will be spent delivering clinical services to include individual and group counseling and crisis intervention; with the remaining time involved in outreach programming (providing presentations and workshops to promote personal growth and wellness of students, serving on panels, and assisting with tabling events), consultation, and receiving supervision. Additional duties may include the provision of training and supervision/mentorship of master's level counselors-in-training, administration of ADHD/LD assessments, and service on CAPS and University committees. Finally, there may be an opportunity to develop a specialty project for an area of personal interest such as in testing, outreach, trauma, etc. The advanced mental health resident receives a variety of training opportunities. Residents will receive both individual and group supervision commensurate with the requirements for licensure. Supervision will be geared toward skill development, completion of licensure requirements, and professional development issues. In addition to supervision, there is weekly case consultation with all of the clinical staff. As a center, we believe in and provide an "open-door" policy for all staff and trainees. Residents also receive additional training through seminars and workshops on topics such as the DBT, ethics, and mindfulness.

Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

An earned doctorate in psychology or a master's degree in counseling or psychology by start date. Completion of a supervised clinical internship or equivalent work experience. Psychology applicants must have graduated from APA-accredited programs and have completed an APA/APPIC approved internship. ABD candidates will be considered. Additionally, the position requires evidence of strong clinical skills, excellent interpersonal skill including oral and written communication, and the ability to work independently and as part of a counseling center team. Experience in a college/university counseling center is preferred. As the primary designated mental health service on campus, CAPS is a valued component of the Wellness Unit. The Wellness Unit is an integral part of the Division of Student Affairs at Longwood University. The Postgraduate Residency position carries a monthly stipend of $3,200 for post-doctoral residents and $2,600 for post-master's residents. Commonwealth of Virginia benefits accompany this position.
