Ranch Hand

Reports to Ranch Manager

Job Purpose:

Ensures ranch livestock has sufficient and plentiful food and water supply.

Checks for any sick or hurt livestock and takes necessary steps to report to the Ranch Manager about hurt or sick livestock found.

Keeps an inventory of ranch livestock and reports the inventory to the Ranch Manager monthly.

Performs maintenance on equipment.

Checks and ensures fuel generators are operational.

Repairs any leaking or broken water lines.

Repairs any fence lines that are damaged and or down.

Builds or fabricates parts by cutting and welding metal.

Identifies parts needed to complete maintenance.

Assists with Ranch duties as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Oversees Ranch activities.

Responsible for the care of cows, bulls, and calves including feeding, branding, sorting, and herding, working cattle through cattle chutes, dehorning, castrating, vaccinating, pregnancy testing, calving out heifers, weaning and processing calves.

Job Purpose:

Hands on experience required in ranching, pre-conditioning, feedlot, or farm with experience in yearling cow/calf herd health and feeding.

Beef and agricultural business background a plus.

Skills, Abilities, Knowledge and Other Qualifications:

Valid New Mexico driver’s License required.

Skill: Knowledge of principles and techniques of cattle ranching, range, and related activities.

Skill: Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Skill: Ability to administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Skill: Knowledge of public safety and security regulations, general and environmental laws and regulations, tribal and government laws.

Skill: Ability to lift certain outdoor equipment.

Skill: Ability to operate a two-way radio device.

Skill: Ability to operate a motor vehicle, four-wheel drive vehicle, standard transmission vehicle, all-terrain vehicle, four-wheeler vehicle.

Skill: Ability to identify livestock problems and environmental conditions and to respond to emergencies quickly and appropriately.

Responsibilities:

Responsible for horses, and their care, including shoeing, feeding, grooming, and care of Ranch owned tack.

Responsible for the care of cows, bulls, and calves including feeding, branding, sorting, and herding, working cattle through cattle chutes, dehorning, castrating, vaccinating, pregnancy testing, calving out heifers, weaning and processing calves.

Responsible for maintenance of water pipelines, “drinkers”, pumps, windmills, fences, gates, facilities, equipment, and other Ranch structures.

Responsible for maintaining efficient written records of equipment and livestock.

Must maintain harmonious business and team member relationships on all levels, have good communication skills verbal and written, have desire to grow personally as well as grow the business.

Must be socially perceptive, administer good to excellent judgement and decision-making abilities essential.

Must be able to handle stressful situations, maintain composure and be able to prevent and/or handle emergency situations may be required to administer first aid/or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Must be able to identify and develop rangeland improvement projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Experience: High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required.

Work Location: Multiple locations.

Working conditions will be outdoors, varied climate environment and may include exposure to certain weather conditions and moderate to loud noise levels. Often required to ride on horseback and in truck on ranch property and surrounding areas that are rough, uneven, and/or rocky terrain.

Requires working days/evenings including weekends, holidays and special event shifts, work schedule may vary (24/7/365).
