is seeking an Associate Scientist II for our Neuroscience Team at our San Diego, California location to synthesize potential drug candidate molecules directed towards the discovery of medicines to treat neuropsychiatric diseases, especially disorders of mood and cognition. Synthesize, purify, identify, characterize, and analyze compounds using various analytical techniques under the direction of a senior chemist. Provide input and identify problems with scientific experiments; analyze tasks within assigned area; maintain current laboratory equipment; and operate analytical and other instrumentation including ISCO, Gilson, Agilent, Waters HPLC’s, and Bruker NMR’s. Assist in the development of recommendations for improving standard procedures; maintain accurate record keeping and experimental data with the use of statistical packages and standard databases; draft technical reports; and contributing to information management. Additional responsibilities include the analysis of structure-activity relationships for small molecule CNS drug candidates, developing synthetic methodology to perform multistep syntheses and performing reactions on milligram to multi-gram scale. Position requires a Master’s degree in Chemistry, or a related field, and two years of experience in medicinal chemistry. Experience may be gained pre or post Master’s degree. A qualified applicant will possess experience within a laboratory setting; with independent research projects; and within the small molecule drug discovery area. Industrial experience pursuing drug discovery in medical chemistry is also required. Must possess experience in the following software programs: ChemDraw, ISIS Draw, MestRenova, Microsoft office, ACD Labs, SciFinder, and Reaxys; with the use of electronic lab notebooks; with proton, carbon, and fluorine NMR, as well as other NMR techniques including DEPT, COSY, NOESY, NOE, APT, HMQC, HSQC, and HMBC and additional analytical techniques needed include reversed phase preparative HPLC, and LCMS. Experience with the synthesis of small molecules; with the optimization of their properties in order to access the central nervous system compartment; and with instrumentation including ISCO, Gilson, Agilent, Waters HPLC’s, and Bruker NMR’s is also required.
