NATURE OF WORK

Installs, configures, and maintains the organization’s LAN server and workstations. Manages performance of multiple hardware and software platforms that interface at the most complex level. This is technical work in coordinating and managing a complex computer system’ network of microcomputers for county government and or schools. Work involves hardware management, coordination of software needs for the system users, coordination of software upgrades, providing resolution of equipment or communications problems, and consultation with users on potential computerization through the use of the systems or equipment. Position reports to the Manager of Data Processing, and is directly supervised by Senior Network Administrator. This level is distinguished from the Computer Systems Administrator II & III level by being the entry level of responsibility for a system that supports a lesser variety of computing needs of several cooperating organizations including many software packages and programming languages, planning and budgetary input based on projected use or changes to the system, communications to other computing environments, and many differing uses of the system. Work may include supervision or other related duties as required.

TYPICAL DUTIES

Manages the acquisition, installation, and maintenance of the organization’s local area networks and wide area networks. Analyzes products and recommends use of new products and services to senior management. Manages LAN/WAN performance and security. Establishes and implements policies and procedures for LAN/WAN usage throughout the organization. Provides operational support of the computer networks and associated equipment; adds and deletes users, terminals, and other equipment on the system or network; trouble shoots equipment, software, and communications problems; and monitors the system for speed and performance. Duties include discussions with users or potential users of the networks to explain the information technology capabilities of the network being managed; to define enhancements or levels of service expected of the networks; to research current and potential software or programming capabilities to determine computerization possibilities; trains users on the capabilities of the systems and networks; and provides problem determination and resolution for users. Provides security for the systems in his domain, including the selection and implementation of virus protection software. This level is distinguished by the variety of uses of the systems and networks requiring more in-depth knowledge of system/network capabilities to determine user computerization possibilities and to troubleshoot equipment, software, and communications problems; and the involvement with management in defining user needs and projecting budgets for a system or the application of technology. Handles WAN/LAN configuration and implementation with minimal supervision. Duties may include supervision, especially of the computer technician(s).

KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Has considerable skills in analyzing, programming, testing, and debugging computer programs. Has good “people” skills to be able to ascertain their network, computer and data problems and needs. Learns quickly and desires to enhance his skills. Is willing to attend 1 to 10 day classes in computer hardware and software in locations away from home. Can lift and locate computer- related hardware of from 20 to 25 lbs. or more.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Typically requires BS degree and 3-4 years relevant experience, or equivalent.

(Position is in the classified service and is FLSA non-exempt)

This position pays annually $48,118.00 – $51,726.85 (Salary commensurate with experience)
