Summary

Public Health – Seattle & King County is seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Nutritionist II to join the Regional WIC Team serving north King County. The incumbent is considered a lead who provides support and directs the work/training of assigned staff, while being responsible for performing the full scope of Nutritionist duties and providing nutrition program coordination for a specific geographic area. Duties also include individual and group nutrition assessments, counseling, education, and evaluations, in addition to planning, coordinating, and evaluating nutrition programs for the site and community.

Job Duties

  • Conduct individual sessions to assess client’s nutritional needs using anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and dietary information, for clients within WIC programs; implement and document care plans as necessary.
  • Assess the changing needs of medically complex and high-risk clients, primarily pregnant and breastfeeding persons, infants, and children.
  • Accurately obtain and document anthropometric measurements for infants, children, and adults.
  • Provide health care education with other multi-disciplinary team members regarding nutrition and other health related topics as needed.
  • Provide breastfeeding education and support to pregnant women and new mothers.
  • Regularly utilize clinic practice management software and data systems, including Cascades and EPIC.
  • Review, monitor and schedule the work of assigned staff in WIC program; problem solve day-to-day operational issues as assigned by the site supervisor.
  • Assist in the staff hiring process; provide input to performance evaluations; provide day-to-day coaching and on-the-job training to new employees and WIC staff as assigned; ensure WIC competency requirements are met.
  • Collaborate with site supervisor and program staff to coordinate designated quality assurance activities and ensure compliance with set standards.
  • Oversee the collection and analysis of site-specific data to identify populations at risk and participate in research into and improvement of health care delivery.
  • Coordinate care with team members and other health care providers and make referrals to appropriate services; provide and document case management as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively to ensure team workflows meet both WIC and Frist Steps standards, strategize and implement workflow changes as needed, and provide or facilitate community outreach efforts related to WIC and First Steps.
  • Develop and present educational information to clients individually, in classes or to community groups on nutrition and food related topics.
  • Participate in the collection and analysis of data to identify populations at risk, and participate in research and improvement efforts related to health care delivery.
  • Participate collaboratively with the community to assess and address health issues, including the development of health programs.
  • Develop and implement nutrition standards for populations of focus, such as prenatal and patients with increased risk.
  • Provide technical assistance and nutrition consultation; may provide in-service training for staff. Precept nutrition interns from various educational institutions.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Bachelor or Master’s of Science, or Master’s of Public Health in Nutrition.
  • Current Registered Dietician (RD), registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, or the ability to attain registration by date of hire.
  • Must be Washington State Certified Dietician (CD) or be able to obtain within 30 days.
  • A National Provider Identifier (NPI) must be obtained within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Documentation of current BLS CPR certification with AED training required at time of offer. CPR/AED Heartsaver courses do not meet this requirement.
  • Ability to obtain Washington State Medical Assistant-Registered or Phlebotomist license within 30 days of hire to perform hemoglobin/hematocrit testing on WIC participants.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in providing direct client nutrition services in a health care setting, preferably WIC.
  • Demonstrated experience providing nutrition education in a group setting; as well as clear ability to organize, lead, and facilitate group discussions and staff training.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, scheduling coordinating and evaluating the work of assigned staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide patients with birth control, STD, HIV/AIDS, and pregnancy options related education.
  • Proficiency using computer programs within a Windows environment, and the ability to use drop down menus, point and click software, multiple screens, and the ability to enter data with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to model and maintain good interpersonal interactions with clients and coworkers as a member of a multi-disciplinary public health team with a diverse multi-cultural population.
  • Working knowledge of supervisory principles and techniques and personnel procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in quality assurance activities.
  • Working knowledge of funding resources for nutrition services.
  • Ability to lift and lower a child weighing up to 35 pounds onto a surface more than 4 feet high with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to travel in a timely manner within King County to locations that may have limited access to public transportation.

 Work location: North Regional A position will serve multiple sites throughout North King County, with a base site at Northshore Public Health Center at 13030 121st Way NE, Kirkland. The candidate must have the ability to work and travel to sites throughout North King County and drive a King County-issued car.
 
Work schedule: The normal work schedule for this position is Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm.
