Status:  PRN - As Needed

Shift:     Hours vary depending upon need. Any shift between 05:00 - 16:00 Monday - Friday. Weekends and holidays as assigned although not typically worked.

Summary:

Under supervision of the Anatomic Pathology Supervisor, performs required histotechnology/cytology procedures on specimens received in the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory for evaluation and diagnosis by a Pathologist. These procedures include, but are not limited to: simple grossing; processing, embedding and cutting tissues from surgical specimens for routine histology; preparing body fluids and tissues for cytological examination; performing routine and special stains; and, performing immunohistochemical (IHC) stains.

A.Experience, Knowledge and Skill

1.Previous Experience Required:

One year of full-time acceptable work experience in a general histopathology (clinical, veterinary, industry, or research) accredited laboratory in the US or Canada within the last five years

[Full time experience is defined as a minimum of thirty-five (35) hours per week. Individuals who have part-time experience may be permitted to utilize prorated part-time experience to meet the work experience requirements.]

[Accredited laboratory is defined as having a CMS CLIA certificate of registration or accreditation OR Accreditation under ISO 15189]

 

2.Specialized or Technical Education Required:

Successfully completed a NAACLS accredited Histotechnologist program

OR

Obtained a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States or proof of an officially evaluated equivalent from a foreign college or university AND the baccalaureate degree includes a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both).

3. Certification Required:

Registered Histotechnologist HTL or HT(ASCP).

4. Manual or Physical Skill Required:

a.Must have an understanding of proper body mechanics

b.Must have finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to handle and manipulate instruments and other equipment.

c.Must have good visual acuity and color discrimination. Must be tested for difficulty with color discrimination.

d.Many activities involve substantial repetitive motion.

Responsibilities:

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

1.Reviews all orders submitted with specimens to insure that all required information is present from physicians and the specimens are appropriately submitted.

2.Recognizes properly fixed specimens from the completed cycle of the tissue processor;

  1. Skilled in correctly orienting and embedding biopsy, surgical, skin, and diagnostic cytology cell block tissue specimens.

4.Cuts and mounts paraffin block tissue specimens for optimum diagnostic viewing by pathologist.

5.Labels slides and specimens accurately and completely.

6.Performs routine and special stains to provide optimum tissue differentiation.

7.Performs cover slipping such that tissue elements are not obscured.

8.Prepares slides for and independently performs IHC staining as requested by the pathologist.

  1. Proficient in operating, maintaining and troubleshooting all equipment in the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory according to manufacturer recommendations and procedures.
  2. Provides assistance in the gross room and with frozen sections, if personnel shortages exist, as permitted.
  3. Proficient and knowledgeable about the pathology information system and hospital/department computer software and other digital systems, including computer downtime operations.
  4. Performs quality control and analyzes its acceptability.
  5. Investigates, documents, communicates, and resolves problems or complaints.
  6. Assists in stocking supplies and notifies appropriate staff of low inventory.

15.Maintains records of all statistics as required by CAP and CLIA.

  1. Completes all yearly competency and continuing education.
  2. Attends and participates in meetings (departmental, in-service, etc.) as necessary.

18.Maintains professional growth and development through literature, seminars, conferences and professional affiliations.

19.Assists in all aspects of emergency response.May be required to work other shifts, weekends and holidays as assigned.

20.Performs all duties in a safe manner to minimize risk to self and others.

21.FollowsNorthOaksHealthSystem'scomplianceprogramsandallfederalandstateregulatoryguidelines.
