The Executive Director of Environmental Health and Safety is charged with providing leadership and management to the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) and is responsible for the development, implementation, administration, facilitation, and monitoring of environmental health and safety programs to provide a safe and healthful environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors. The position reports to the Associate Vice President of Enterprise Risk Services and works collaboratively with university stakeholders to support academic and research excellence while promoting a culture of safety in compliance with applicable regulations and best practices. The Executive Director will provide strong leadership and management to OEHS to optimize Tulane’s compliance with requirements and regulations from federal, state and local agencies and departments such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Transportation (DOT) and Department of Defense (DOD) and Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (LDHH), and Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) and various other state and local agencies as applicable. He/she will service within the University’s Emergency Operations Center in advising on environmental health and safety matters during emergency events. The Executive Director participates in multiple University advisory committees including, but not limited to, the Administrative Council, University Research Council, Enterprise Risk Management Steering Committee, Environmental Health and Safety Operations Committee, Radiation Safety Committee, Facilities Coordination and Communications Committee, and Research Compliance Operations Committee, In addition, the Executive Director provides oversight to OEHS’s involvement on the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and the Control of Occupational Exposures Committee. The Executive Director will have an executive presence with strong interpersonal and communication skills that will exhibit collaborative leadership and the ability to develop partnerships with key stakeholders within the University community. He/She will be customer focused and highly knowledgeable in technical issues involving environmental health and safety and will service as the key environmental health and safety expert and leader within the University. The position requires a detail-oriented person with excellent written and organizational skills, strong analytical and decision making skills and high level strategic management skills.
