This is advanced professional engineering and planning work of considerable difficulty planning, directing, analyzing and coordinating traffic engineering design and implementation in the Transportation and Mobility Department.
 
The Traffic Engineer (Project Manager II classification) authorizes plans, directs, coordinates, and implements a wide variety of traffic engineering programs and projects.  Work requires project management skills and the ability to effectively negotiate with outside consultants and contractors.  Responsibilities include the management of numerous projects, simultaneously, in various stages of development including planning, consultant selection, design, construction management, and evaluation.  The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of and experience with traffic design and simulation modeling software and engineering design & construction methods, as well as experience with city-wide master planning/modeling, multi-modal level of service, maintenance of traffic, and innovative traffic calming engineering solutions. The employee advises the Department Director, other City departments, neighborhood representatives and residents on the status of, and important issues associated with, City and other agency traffic projects.
 
Under general direction, the employee performs complex assignments which require extensive initiative and independent judgment in assuring that activities meet high standards of service and are performed with maximum effective use of resources; that planning and engineering functions are accomplished in accordance with appropriate technical standards; and that activities are performed in consistent accord with City policy directives.  Work is reviewed via conferences with the employee, through study of reports submitted, by direct observation, and by the degree of achievement of goals, objectives, and work plans.

This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Federation of Public Employees and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Federation of Public Employees.

JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS PARTICULAR POSITION AS A TRAFFIC ENGINEER:

1. Have graduated from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or other appropriate technical  or engineering field.

2. Have at least four (4) years professional engineering experience which included traffic design, planning, and operations. Additional qualifying work experience may be substituted for the required college education on a year-for-year basis.

3. Be registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Florida, or be registered in another state and obtain Florida registration within one (1) year from the date of appointment.
 
PREFERENCES:
1. Experience in the planning and implementation of multi-modal signal timing plans.
2. MOT certification.

An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes.  To obtain veteran's preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form (J-204 ).
