Position Summary:  The overall purpose of this job is to provide guidance, instruction, and leadership to pharmacy technology students enrolled in the Pharmacology Technology Certificate program. Complete evaluation, scheduling, and advising of students. To coordinate clinical needs of the Pharmacology Technology Program with the Dean of Health Sciences. To address issues and concerns of Pharmacology Technology program, seek solutions, and refer to Dean of Health Sciences as appropriate. To fulfill the role in chain of command as Program Chair. To ensure Pharmacology Technology curricula meets standards of care and refers to departmental Curriculum and Testing Committee as appropriate. To coordinate clinical experiences for students at area healthcare facilities and community agencies. Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with college faculty, staff, students, general public, program advisory committees, and other healthcare professionals.

Essential Functions:

20% Instruction in theory in pharmacology courses.

4.5% Assist in the direction of student activities ordinarily associated with an instructional program on the community college or university level.

4% Participate in departmental activities associated with the instructional program.

1% Assist in managing department budget management.

10% Demonstrate a willingness and commitment to extra-curricular responsibilities on behalf of the department, college, and district.

5% Participate in professional organizations related to nursing, allied health, and education.

.5% Orient new adjunct faculty to payroll paperwork, and departmental procedures

2% Applies effective problem solving related to student, and faculty issues in classroom settings, and maintains an awareness of issues at the campus sites.

1% Assist with clearing criminal background checks for students.

2% Assist with the Tennessee Clinical Placement Services requirements for clinical and observational schedules by answering questions related to immunizations and requirements.

3% Visit clinical facility to evaluate Fulltime Clinical Faculty

4% Assist Dean with the completion of annual accreditation reports

2% Updates Strategic Plan 90-day report.

3% Collaborate with Coordinator of Skills/Simulation Laboratories, Technical Coordinator of Skills/Simulation laboratories. Collaborate with Skills/Simulation Coordinator on student assessment, evaluation, and curriculum to address issues and recommend appropriate changes as needed.  

15% Collaborate with Coordinator of Skills/Simulation Laboratories, Technical Coordinator of Skills/Simulation laboratories. Collaborate with Skills/Simulation Coordinator on student assessment, evaluation, and curriculum to address issues and recommend appropriate changes as needed.  

3% Coordinate with testing systems for standardizing and remediation of students.

4% Work independently and in coordination with the Dean of Health Sciences Administration to handle a wide variety of situations and conflicts.

5% Monitor ongoing accreditation needs of the department; provide input and guidance for faculty for in maintaining accreditation requirements. Collects accreditation data for allied health proposals

3% Provide decision making and judgment on confidential issues that pertain to nursing students and faculty.

2% Meet with student advisees on a monthly base to discuss any concerns or issues and advise for degree completion.

3% Chair and member of various departmental and college level committees.

3% Assist the dean with other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Training:

The program chair must:

1.      Be a licensed pharmacist or a nationally certified pharmacy technician.

2.      Hold IJCAHPO certification at the same level or higher to that of the program being delivered.

3.      Hold a minimum of an Associate in Arts, an Associate of Science, or an Associate’s of Applied Science Degree and should be actively pursuing, with a written plan for achieving, at least a Bachelor’s Degree as an appropriate teaching credential.

4.      Demonstrate competency in cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.

Years of Experience:

 A.       Three years’ work experience in the past 5 years as a pharmacy technician, or be a licensed pharmacist

 B.       One year of full-time teaching experience in a certificate program or professional office setting training program.

 C.      Hold IJCAHPO certification at the same level or higher to that of the program being delivered

Special Skills/Application of Knowledge:

·       Assists in coordinating the day-to-day operations of the program. Execute complex professional tasks requiring a high level of technical proficiency, decision-making and judgment on complex, confidential and/or sensitive issues. 

·       Communicate information clearly and concisely in person and/or on the telephone, exercising tact, patience, discretion and professional demeanor.

·       Ability to function productively in an ever-changing, high-stress, fast-paced environment with numerous interruptions.

·       Ability to take initiative, work independently, make decisions, along with dependability in follow-through.

·       Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.

·       Ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, colleagues, alumni and visitors.

·       Demonstrated organizational skills, accuracy and efficiency in keeping records.

·       Experience with data management, design of program materials and website updates

·       Being proficient in a second language is not required.

·       Ability to engage in the college’s mission and values.

Complexity & Creativity: This role relies on established departmental standards to produce internal and external reports and documents. Professional and technical proficiency is needed for innovative devices such as: 1) computerized testing, and 2) components of the learning management setting.

Creative thinking is needed in departmental brainstorming situations in order to improve student outcomes.

Complexity is encountered on a daily basis regarding progress of allied health projects and fiscal and equipment needs of programs.

Budgetary: Assist the dean as needed.

Responsibility for Accuracy: Errors in course scheduling. Judgement and Decisions: Lecture material development, presentation, coordination of lecture and lab/simulation material presented, chair of various committees, minor changes in curriculum, counseling of students and faculty, approval of student requirements. Decisions are reviewed by the Dean of Health Sciences and other members of administration as appropriate.

Personal Contacts: All college departments, Advisory Board members, potential students, textbook vendors, personnel at area clinical agencies, community leaders, Assistant VPAA for CTE, and TBR.

Nature of Contacts: Provide or get information to potential students, financial aid, veteran departments, human resources, enrollment services (immunization, major changes), negotiate contract with assessment testing, textbooks, and to assess the clinical experiences of the students. Obtain and provide information from and to community leaders, accreditation bodies, College administration, and TBR on the Pharmacology Technology Program.

Physical Demands: Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Job requires some travel between college site campuses. Physical exertion is average and manual dexterity.

Audible Demands: Must be able to hear and communicate with perspective and current students, colleagues, faculty and staff, in addition to daily walk-in traffic. Also, the ability to accurately assess a patient relating to blood pressure, lung sounds, etc.

Visual Demands: Employee duties require computer competency and attention to detail. Daily correspondence to multiple constituencies, student records accessed in banner, and various confidential documents are reviewed daily for accuracy and departmental requirements. Also, the ability to accurately draw up and provide medications to patients in the clinical setting as well as equipment use in clinical setting.

Color Perception: Spreadsheets, flyers, background checks, drug screens and other departmental documentation created and reviewed use color to clarify results. Also, the ability to read charts, EHRs, test results, and other patient documentation in the clinical setting.

Environmental Conditions: Normal office, classroom, and clinical environment

Hazards: Injuries of falls on a wet floor – little probability of happening
