Position Title: Research & Writing Attorney Vacancy #18-01 Position Location: Salt Lake City, Utah The Federal Public Defender for the District of Utah is accepting applications for a Legal Research and Writing Specialist Attorney. This is a temporary position for an initial period of no more than a year and a day, with possible renewal based upon continued availability of funding. The federal defender organization operates under authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. S3006A, to provide defense services in federal criminal cases and related matters in the federal courts.

Job Description/Qualifications:

Provide legal research and writing services to trial and appeal attorneys in support of their capital and non-capital habeas representation of indigent defendants in federal court; perform computer assisted legal research; aid in development of legal strategies; draft motions, briefs, petitions for certiorari and legal memoranda. Excellent writing, strong computer-assisted legal research and interpersonal communication skills are essential, as is the ability to analyze legal issues from lengthy, complex records and write clearly and concisely. Ability to prioritize projects and work both independently and cooperatively. Research & Writing Attorneys may not engage in the private practice of law. Requirements. J.D. degree from an accredited law school and admitted to practice and in good standing with the Utah Bar. Three to five years capital and non-capital habeas work experience required.
