Job Description

Provides overnight intensive nursing care to all large animal patients and clinical assistance as directed by clinicians. Supervises, orients, instructs, and evaluates senior veterinary students in the medical management of patients. Provides primary patient care, will work on holidays and weekends on rotating basis, may be required to alter shifts as need arises.

Required Qualifications

Licensed or eligible for license as a Veterinary Technician within the State of Virginia, OR enrolled in an accredited Licensed Veterinary Technician Program, expectation to complete within 1218 months. Knowledge of large animal anatomy, physiology and etiology; knowledge of CPR and animal restraint methods; proficiency in the operation, maintenance, and application of sophisticated medical equipment such as IV pumps, heart monitors, centrifuge, oxygen cage, incubator, ventilator, video endoscope system, hoists and slings, and glucometer and refractometer; ability to receive and convey information and instructions to senior veterinary students and clinical faculty, to recognize needs and establish priorities, care and concerns for large animal patients, and make emergency decisions relating to health and safety of animals and people; ability to safely move and handle up to 75 lbs. Must be able to tolerate rabies prophylaxis.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a large animal practice environment, ability to work well with others in an academic setting.
