General Definition of Work

Performs semi-skilled work in the general maintenance of transit buses, equipment and facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned.   Work is performed under the supervision of the Lead Mechanic. Supervision is exercised over assigned staff. This position is classified as an essential position during designated planned or unplanned events.  The position also involves performance of safety-sensitive functions as defined by 49 CFR Part 655, as amended.

Additional pay opportunities:
  •  $2.00 shift differential pay
  •  Hiring Bonus Offered:
    • Total $1000
1st bonus  $250 received three (3) months after initial hire date
2nd bonus $250 received upon completion of probation - this in addition to the standard $250 probationary bonus
3rd bonus $250 received nine (9) months after initial hire date

Essential Functions

  • Schedules and supervises the daily activities of the Maintainers; assigns duties to temporary employees.
  • Washes bus exteriors using automated wash equipment; details transit vehicles seasonally.
  • Cleans bus interiors; changes fare box vaults.
  • Fuels and checks fluid levels of transit vehicles.
  • Notifies transit mechanics of any issues including leaks, starter issues, safety concerns, etc.
  • Maintains immediate work area and grounds; performs minor maintenance and repairs to the automated washer.
  • Maintains and orders supplies as needed.
  • Cleans bodily fluid spills and cleans/treats bloodborne spills.
  • Ensures proper training of Maintainers in their work tasks; performs evaluations of staff working in the Maintainers area with assistance from Lead Mechanic.
  • Responsible for ensuring Transit fleet is properly fueled, fluids maintained to proper levels and all vehicles kept clean inside and out.
  • Responsible for ensuring the Maintainers area is properly staffed for each shift and is responsible for requesting additional help when short staff members and ensuring special events are covered.
  • Responsible for ensuring work area and all Maintainers equipment is properly maintained; responsible for ensuring that all necessary chemicals and supplies are maintained and used in a cost-effective manner and ordered as needed.
  • Performs required record-keeping and ensures all forms and records are properly filled out and saved by all Maintainers.                          
  • Ensures seasonal detail work is scheduled, performed properly and documented to ensure all vehicles are included during the time allotted.                        
  • Ensures that maintainers follow the policy on collecting and turning in lost and found items found on fleet vehicles.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General knowledge of the operation and routine cleaning requirements of transit passenger buses; general knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing passenger bus operations on public streets; general knowledge of routine maintenance and repair work and of the use of common hand tools; skill in the safe operation of passenger buses and the automated wash facility; ability to perform manual labor; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in the maintenance and operation of large automotive equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements
Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia with a satisfactory driving record.
A pre-employment drug screening is required for this position.   Drug and alcohol testing guidelines as set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Transit Administration will be followed during the employment period. 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to vibration and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
