Summary
The Assistant Director of Residential Life supports the strategic vision of Residential Life at the University of Missouri which offers students the opportunity to live, learn, and thrive within a residential campus community. This position is responsible for providing administrative and leadership support to a residential neighborhood encompassing traditional residence halls, suite-style communities, and/or apartment housing. This position reports to the Associate Director for Residential Academic Programs.
This position will be assigned to the following functional area:
Student Care and Community Standards
- Serve as department liaison and collaborate with the Care Team and Office of Student Accountability and Support to assist with case management of Residential Life students referred for care and/or reported for allegations of misconduct.
- Advise and providing training to Sr. Residence Hall Coordinators on protocols, practices, and procedures related to student care and conduct, including use of Maxient.
- Review Residential Life incident reports related to care and conduct and assist with appropriate referral to campus offices.
- Assist and support the Care Team and the Office of Student Accountability and Support with students of concern and incidents of misconduct involving Residential Life students.
- Oversee management of assigned Residential Life cases in consultation with the Associate Director for Residential Life, the Care Team, and the Office of Student Accountability and Support.
- Develop and implement programming related to Residential Life’s efforts focused on belonging, health, wellness, and harm reduction.
- Collaborate with the Wellness Resource Center, Student Health and Wellbeing, and the Counseling Center on programming and student support initiatives in the residence halls.
- Collaborate with the Director of Strategic Initiatives for Student Affairs to oversee the New Student Check-In process in support of first year, residence hall students experiencing homesickness and sense of belonging.
- Review and assess department incident management protocols and oversee department training related to emergency and crisis response.
Essential Responsibilities
Leadership
Serve on a leadership team within Residential Life providing insight into procedures, protocols, staffing, program development and other services impacting the student residential experience. Provide leadership and advisement to various key initiatives within Residential Life, including but not limited to annual Move-In and Move-Out processes, Staff Selection and Training, Contracting and Assignments, Summer Housing, Camps and Conferences, Facilities Management, as well as Marketing and Communications.
Administrative Responsibilities
As assigned, manage and direct functional areas and key departmental processes. The functional areas include Residential Education; Residential Operations; Staff Development and Leadership; as well as Student Care and Community Standards. As assigned, represent the department on committees both campus wide and within Residential Life. Provide timely and clear verbal and electronic communication with all internal and external campus partners.
Supervision and Staff Development
Supervise 4-6 live-in professional staff members and 65-70 student staff members for a residential neighborhood consisting of approximately 1500-2000 students. Select, train, coach, supervise, and evaluate direct reports and assigned student staff. Promote and encourage staff professional development and involvement in relevant professional associations.
Crisis Response and Management
Serve in a weekly on-call rotation with a team of Assistant Directors responding providing high-level response and guidance to Residential Life live-in professional staff and student staff. Develop and evaluate strategies for the management of critical and non-critical incidents including student wellness, facility emergencies, and other incidents impacting student and community safety.
Commitment to Student Learning and Leadership
Work with fellow Assistant Directors of Residential Life to ensure residential education initiatives are being appropriately developed, implemented, and assessed for student success and development. Work with direct reports to oversee and develop activities to engage student learning, foster community building, encourage development of student leaders, and promote diversity and inclusion in assigned residential neighborhood.
Relationship Building
Foster a positive, supportive, and collaborative relationship with campus partners including but not limited to: Division of Student Affairs, Office of the Dean of Students, Care Team, Office of Student Accountability and Support, Campus Police Department, Office of Institutional Equity, Wellness Resource Center, Disability Center, Counseling Center, Student Health Center, and MizzouRec; as well as units within Residential Life including Business Operations, Administrative Operations, Guest and Conference Services, and Facilities and Safety Planning.
Serve as a resource to support Residential Life and Mizzou recruitment activities including but not limited to Mizzou Admissions events and tours, Meet Mizzou days, Summer Welcome, Welcome Week activities, and supporting the success of Freshmen Interest Groups (FIGs) and learning communities. Work closely with fellow department staff to ensure administrative excellence within residential neighborhoods and assigned functional area.
Additional Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with housing and campus partners to ensure the mission and vision of Residential Life is accomplished. Serve as an active member of the department and other university committees/task forces as assigned. Complete other duties consistent with the purpose of this position that may be assigned.
