Job Description:

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Financial Aid Advisor will work closely with the University's EOP student population to provide customer service, including financial aid counseling, processing of financial aid, outreach as needed, and financial aid information sessions. Advisor will report to the Assistant Director of Financial Aid. The individual in this position will assist with the review and determination of the economic eligibility of applicants for admission to the Educational Opportunity Program. This includes communication outreach and attending recruitment programs and events, minimal travel throughout the recruitment cycle is required. In addition, the EOP Financial Aid Advisor will support customer service in general.

Financial Aid Advisors in the Office of Financial Aid, support customer service (i.e. phones, lobby, chatbot and email) and the processing that is required for State and/or Federal Student Aid. The individual will be a subject matter expert for all aspects of Financial Aid, compliance, Title IV funding, and packaging.  Provide support and administer all aspects of student financial aid programs and services and will provide financial counseling to students as requested. The individuals will also work with the Student Information Systems (PeopleSoft/Oracle), companion systems, which support the university with a focus on financial aid management, scholarships, and verification (document imaging, CampusLogic/StudentForms, Slate, NSLDS, COD, and other locally developed and commercial software tools, etc.). The successful candidate must also possess a general understanding of financial aid and be able to think independently and make autonomous decisions.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Works with the Assistant Director of Financial Aid to determine the economic eligibility of freshman EOP applicants to meet our enrollment goals.
  • Assist with EOP outreach recruitment programs which can include webinars, minimal travel within New York State, financial aid workshops, and phone calls to reach students and to complete files for review.
  • Assist at recruiting and other campus/external events such as Open House, High School FAFSA filing, SUNY Financial Aid Days, and Orientation Events.
  • Counsels and advises students and families regarding various aid programs, their eligibility for appropriate programs, application procedures and deadlines, resolution of aid-related problems, and financing of higher education.
  • Collaborates with other Financial Aid Advisors to facilitate cross-functional training and testing as necessary.
  • Works with the EOP Office, Student Accounts, and Bursar Staff to assist in the resolution and collection of student payments, confirming awards, customer service, and determining a course of action needed for the outstanding balance.
  • Perform needs analysis and package all forms of financial aid in accordance with Federal, State, and institutional regulations and policies.
  • Develop expertise, provide support and understand all financial aid resources and application sources (e.g., HESC, NYSFAAA, NASFAA, COD, NSLDS, NSC, and other pertinent Federal Student Aid sites).
  • Assist team with query review and processing.
  • One semester packaging and loan proration.


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent. The degree must be from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • At least one-year of professional experience administering Title IV or state aid.
  • Experience must include demonstration of attention to detail, strong communication skills, and proficiency in the use and management of one or more integrated business application systems that support processes.
  • Have experience working in a college, university, or University System environment directly with students from an economically and academically disadvantaged background and can demonstrate these experiences.
  • Must be comfortable speaking in front of groups.
  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented and ability to multi-task and manage priorities. Competent with Microsoft Office applications.
  • The applicant must address in their application their ability to work with culturally diverse populations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A responsible role in providing counseling or operational support for financial aid management; familiarity with verification, student loans, TAP, Excelsior, Pell, Federal Work Study, and other forms of financial aid.
  • Speaks Spanish fluently.
  • Have experience managing need-based programs and packaging.
  • Experience using student information systems including the use of query tool and equation engines; preference given if experience using PeopleSoft.
