GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs technical work in the installation,removal and maintenance of communications equipment and other electronic equipment in accordance with governmental codes, rules and regulations. Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Removes or installs communications equipment such as two way mobile radios, electronic sirens and other miscellaneous electronic Police and Fire emergency warning systems.
  • Inspects and assists in preventive maintenance on communications equipment and other ancillary equipment.
  • Performs ground crew support for antenna structure installation, repair, and inspections.
  • Completes maintenance documentation records, work orders and equipment histories.
  • Provides technical assistance to shop customers.

REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES

Education
RequiredHigh school diploma or equivalent supplemented by technical training or college courses related to the installation, maintenance and repair of vehicle wiring or related equipment.
 
Experience
Required: One (1) or more years related experience
 
Certifications/ Licenses
 
Required: Valid Virginia driver’s license with a good driving record
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
 
 
 
  • Knowledge of proper safety practices, methods, materials, and tools used in the installation and maintenance of communications equipment and electronic devices.
  • Good knowledge of electrical and electronic theory as it pertains to automotive systems.
  • Ability to explain the operation of technical equipment to nontechnical personnel
  • Ability to maneuver communications equipment into and out of motor vehicles, including police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, dump trucks or solid waste vehicles.
  • Ability to read and understand wiring diagrams and schematics involving all phases of modern electronic systems. 
  • Ability to delineate color code and hear audio spectrum.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and determine problems.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with other County personnel
 
Additional Requirements
Subject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results. Must also be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description. Ability to operate a four wheel drive vehicle in adverse road and weather conditions.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED
 
 
Safety glasses, safety shoes, (steel shoes, insulated shoes), safety harness (climbing harness) gloves, seasonal clothing, chaps(chainsaw), hearing protection, welding apron & mask, welding gloves.
