Position Summary/Essential Duties:  (Critical-Care)

  • Provides 24/7, 365 medical and surgical management for critical-care service and also serves as the Surgical House Officer (hospital wide) during night shift.
  • Critical-care duties include managing the comprehensive care of acutely and chronically critically ill or injured patients 13 years of age and older in collaboration with the intensivist physician on duty (or on-call).
  • Advanced skills of comprehensive airway management including endotracheal intubations using direct laryngoscopy and video assisted laryngoscopy, surgical airway management including open surgical cricothyrotomy, ventilator management, non-invasive positive pressure ventilation, and high-flow modalities.
  • Invasive procedures to include central lines, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC lines), mid-lines, arterial lines, tube thoracostomy, dialysis catheters, cooling catheters, and various urinary catheters as indicated.
  • Selection, implementation, management, and titration of vasoactive drugs, insulin infusions, sedation, and analgesia.
  • Responds to all full trauma activations in ED, intracranial hemorrhages and aortic syndromes that are being transferred to a higher level of care in the ED.
  • The above listed critical-care duties require that this position must be certified as an acute care nurse practitioner (ACNP)
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Summary/Essential Duties:  (Surgical House)

  • Works in collaboration with multiple surgical service lines to provide perioperative care and support.
  • Duties include history and physical exam, admission note entry, daily post-operative rounding and entering progress notes and orders, seeing new consults including in the emergency department, evaluating any change in condition concerns, assisting with completing the discharge process, and writing discharge summaries. Always providing high quality house coverage service that meets the general and specialty specific clinical needs of the organization.
  • Providing advanced procedural service as needed.  Performing procedures to gain vascular access including PICC lines, mid-lines, intraosseous, and peripheral IVs.  Proficiency in the use of ultrasound guided procedures is required as well as competency to perform the procedure without ultrasound when applicable.
  • Inserting urinary catheters using proper technique and placement.
  • Applying and maintaining complex wound vacuum dressings.
  • Completing admission orders and H&P (if patient is admitted to the surgical service) or Consult (if on medical service with a surgical consult request).
  • Attending and participating in surgical department meetings and OR committee.
  • Developing collegial working relationships with the service line Physician/Surgeons.
  • Maintains current certifications required of all hospital APP’s (BLS, ACLS, CME, DEA).
  • Establishes and performs quality assurance evaluations per hospital QA policy.
  • Performs all services as approved in delineation of privileges by the Medical Staff.  All privileges will be within the scope of licensure as set forth by ORC 4730 or OAC 4723.

Education/Expertise

Completion of a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the ANCC or AANP.

OR

Completion of a physician assistant educational program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the physician assistant or a predecessor organization recognized by the State Medical Board of Ohio.  Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) required.

Required Credentials, License and/or Certifications: 

  • Must hold current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio, national board certification as an ANCP (ANCC or AANP), a Certificate of Authority by the Ohio Board of Nursing as a certified Nurse Practitioner Board of Nursing

          OR

            A valid certificate to practice as a Physician Assistant issued by the State Medical Board of Ohio

  • Valid prescriptive authority as issued by the Ohio Board of Nursing or State Medical Board of Ohio.
  • Must have DEA license or be eligible to apply for DEA number and license.
  • Must have a valid BLS and ACLS card upon hire.
  • Certification for ATLS audit, PALS, and NIHSS required within six months.

Experience & Knowledge: 

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in hospital medicine/surgery, required.
