GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Coordinates the placement of shelter animals in need of temporary fostering by assessing level of care required and placing them in the care of a qualified foster volunteer. Ensures that every animal in foster care with the shelter is provided with the necessary medical and behavioral care. Maintains contact with all active foster volunteers and works to recruit new volunteers as necessary.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinate the volunteer foster program, including recruitment, training, placement, coaching, documentation and termination.
  • Work in coordination with the Clinic Staff and Kennel Supervisor on timely placement of animals in foster homes on intake.
  • Coordinate with the Clinic Staff the return of animals to RCACP for medical treatment, surgery and ultimately adoption.
  • Coordinate the needs of the foster program to facilitate foster placement for animals in the care of RCACP on social media.
  • Maintain a foster data base of all animals and Foster’ with up-to-date status of incoming and outgoing animals.
  • Maintain an organized list of foster family requirements and availability, including contact information.
  • Manage the shelter’s off-site field trip program by identifying appropriate participant dogs, complete appropriate harness fitting, and collect follow-up paperwork to ensure that the program is fitting shelter and community needs.
  • Function as the point of contact for fosters who have emergency needs for their assigned animals.
  • Provide ongoing assistance, coaching, and moral support to current foster families.
  • Stay in contact with foster families to ensure that foster animals are brought back to the shelter at the appropriate time.
  • Oversee the input and maintenance of foster data in Shelter Net.
  • Evaluate animals for adoptability using ASPCA SAFER Canine Behavior Assessment
  • Assign each animal evaluated an ASILOMAR score and record appropriate status in shelter management software.
  • Maintain professional relationship with all animal control personnel, animal welfare organizations, volunteers and coworkers.
NONESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Serve as a back-up to front desk staff when staffing levels dictate.
  • Provides oversight to volunteers, when needed.

REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES

Education
Required:  High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred:  Two year Degree in management
 
Experience
Required:  Some experience working with animals.
Preferred:  Two or more years of experience working with animals.
 
Certifications/ Licenses 
Required:  Valid Virginia driver's license with a good driving record

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 
  • Computer skills to include ability to key forms, create data base, navigate through software, receive and send email and search internet sources.
  • Ability to follow instructions and relay information to other workers. Create training classes and material
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and RCACP partners
  • Ability to document work with simple recordkeeping.
  • Skill in the use of animal care tools, supplies and equipment.
Additional Requirements:
Subject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background search with acceptable results.  Good physical condition. Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.  
 
Supervisory Responsibilities: 
Provides complete supervision to active fosters.
