Public Health – Seattle & King County is seeking to fill an Epidemiologist II position to support two divisions: the Assessment, Policy, and Evaluation Division and the Prevention Division. This position will lead projects related to substance use, injury prevention, behavioral health, and climate change and may involve supervising other staff

This posting is open continuous with the first review of applicants to take place on January 26, 2022.

Term-Limited Temporary positions are "at-will" positions but are eligible for benefits. This TLT is currently anticipated to last for two (2) years. However, funding sources for this work remain uncertain and dependent upon decisions actively being made at both the federal and local levels. As a result, the end date of this position may be adjusted based on those decisions.  The County and the Department continue to work to secure long term funding sources.  

This vacancy can also be filled as a Special Duty opportunity.

For Special Duty Assignment interest, you must be a Career Service, Career Service Exempt or other regular (non-temporary) employees in King County who have completed their initial County probation. You must have supervisor approval prior to taking a Special Duty Assignment.

Work Schedule: 

This position works Monday - Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The work associated with this position will be performed predominantly through teleworking complemented with onsite work and meetings as needed. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities.  Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
 
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required, including the wearing of masks in some situations. King County is doing its part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and remains committed to reducing our carbon footprint.

Job Duties

This position will work in collaboration with a team of epidemiologists, disease investigation specialists, and service providers matter leads, and database developers.

  • Co-design and oversee the implementation of an assessment of substance use, service utilization, and risk perceptions.
  • Co-design and oversee outreach programs to people at high risk for drug overdose.
  • Supervise assigned staff involved in data collection and outreach.
  • Collaborate on the development and analysis of climate change indicators.
  • Conduct data quality assurance, including data cleaning and developing data quality reports.
  • Contribute to the conceptual design of databases/systems and data collection tools.
  • Conduct data integration by matching and merging records across complex data sources.
  • Conduct epidemiological and statistical analysis.
  • Create data visualizations and dashboards (e.g., using Tableau) for internal and external audiences.
  • Develop reports and written summaries for internal and external audiences.
  • Present findings to technical and lay audiences.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Master's degree in epidemiology or related field OR any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the skills, knowledge and abilities required to perform the work.
  • Advanced knowledge of substance use-related topics.
  • Advanced knowledge of climate change. 
  • Experience with syndromic surveillance data.
  • Experience designing databases (e.g., in REDCap).
  • Experience with text messaging software (e.g. Mosio).
  • Experiencing using Application Programming Interface (APIs) to efficiently connect independent data systems.
  • Strong data coding expertise (using SAS or R), including knowledge of methodologies for extracting or creating data sets, conducting text string searches, creating coding efficiencies, recoding data values, creating date/time calculations, applying formats to variables, merging data sets, and transposing data.
  • Experience designing and creating data collection tools.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Skill conducting data quality assurance.
  • Demonstrated experience summarizing analytic methods and results and developing conclusions and recommendations.
  • Expertise creating visualizations of surveillance data using Tableau.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well on a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct projects within timelines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure with multiple competing priorities and deadlines.
