Summary: 

Responsible for the development and implementation of home-based child life support services to clients serviced by the Baystate Home Health & Hospice Pediatric Palliative Care Network (PPCN) Program. Provide specialized therapeutic techniques to children with limited life expectancy, their siblings and families according to a medically approved plan of care, guided by the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) standards and scope of practice.

 

Job Responsibilities: 

1)  Provide child life assessment and recommendations for therapeutic intervention to support comfort, coping and function of pediatric patients in their homes. (To include therapeutic play, psychological preparation, family support & education, etc).

2)  Implement medically approved plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary PPCN team.

3)  Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, staff & community meetings and education.

4)  Serve as a consultant on the team regarding child life therapies and provide training to staff and volunteers on the role and interventions.

5)  Comply with agency documentation standards. Participate in agency Quality Assessment and Improvement activities

6)  Assist PPCN Program Manager in program development, implementation and coordination of special events and programming as set forth in the Department of Public Health contract.   

7)  Provide bereavement support for patients and families regarding anticipatory grief; at the time of death and through follow-up grief interventions.

8) Provide legacy interventions in anticipation of end of life.

9) Provide child life programming to support siblings through education, play and opportunities for expression.

10) Serve as representative on relevant committees in collaboration with Hospice and Baystate Children's Hospital.

11) Collaborate with community service partners in the care of pediatric palliative care patients. (ie: early intervention, school, etc).

Required Work Experience: 

1) 1 Year in Healthcare setting.

2) OR Bachelor's degree and 5 years as a CCLS in a healthcare setting.

Preferred Work Experience: 

1) Bereavement/end of life care.

Skills and Competencies: 

1)  Must be able to function independently in the home care setting while maintaining team collaboration.

2) Must be able to provide child life assessment and interventions to children from a diverse background of ages, needs and abilities.

3) Must be knowledgeable about a wide variety of health care experiences that pediatric palliative care patients may encounter.
