Performs intermediate semiskilled work operating medium to heavy equipment in a variety of public works construction, maintenance and repair projects, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Foreman.
Shift hours and /or days to be worked
April 1st - August 31st, 6:30 - 5:00, Tuesday - Friday
September 1st - March 31st, 7:30 - 4:00, Monday - Friday
General knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities and limitations of equipment used in area of assignment; general knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of equipment; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; skill in the operation of equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to detect signs of mechanical failure of equipment; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in the operation of motorized equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as satisfactory driving record.
Possession of or ability to obtain a Class B CDL within 6 months of employment
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, wearing a self contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
