Summary

We are filling two (2) Career Service (i.e. regular) positions. These are highly skilled heavy duty journey level mechanical positions. These positions require working on a variety of mechanical, electrical, electronic, powertrain and hydraulic systems for vehicles, on and off road construction equipment, portable and stationary equipment, gasoline and diesel powered vehicles at the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill in the Operations Section of King County's Solid Waste Division. Strong skills in troubleshooting and diagnosis are a primary requirement of this position.

WORK LOCATION: Cedar Hills Regional Landfill,16645 228th Avenue SE, Maple Valley, WA

WORK SCHEDULE: These positions work a 40-hour workweek and is overtime eligible with Supervisor approval. These positions may be required to work alternative work schedules to support core service hours. Work schedules are bid by seniority in accordance with the union collective bargaining agreement. Work schedules are as follows: Day shifts: 5/8 Mon - Fri 6am – 2:30pm, 4/10 Sun – Wed and Wed – Sat 6am-4:30pm; Night shifts: 5/8 Mon - Fri 2:30pm – 11pm.

OPERATIONS SECTION PROFILE: The operations section of the Solid Waste Division operates a solid waste transfer and disposal system for residents and businesses in King County (except for Milton, Seattle). The operations section is responsible for the transfer facilities, transportation, maintenance shop (maintaining the division's heavy equipment, vehicles and facilities), landfill operations, landfill gas and wastewater, commercial garbage collection companies and self-haulers (business and residential) bring solid waste to the transfer facilities, where it is located into large transfer trailers and hauled to the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill for disposal. At the landfill, a network of environmental controls ensures the byproducts of the decomposing waste are captured and managed.

EXAMPLES OF JOB DUTIES:
• Diagnose and repair all types of gas, diesel and hybrid powered equipment, including, but not limited to, automobiles, heavy/light trucks, tractors, backhoes, street sweepers, loaders and trailers.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair and replace ignition systems, fuel systems, lighting systems, electrical/computer control systems, radio systems and ABS brake systems.
• Repair transmissions, manual and power-shift, differentials, PTO's and axle assemblies.
• Operate mechanical and electronic testing equipment to troubleshoot and repair systems.
• Maintain service, maintenance and repair records.
• Repair and maintain shop tools and machinery.
• Document maintenance, repairs and problems on work orders.
• Provide technical assistance, repairs and problems on work orders.
• Read and interpret equipment repair manuals, electric and hydraulic schematics and illustrated parts diagrams.
• Safely perform repairs in the field during inclement weather.
• Modify stock equipment to meeting County needs as directed.
• Coordinate repairs and maintenance with other workers.
• Provide technical assistance, direction and advice on complex or unusual projects.
• Use a Windows based computer program for tracking all work performed and retrieving information about work to be performed.
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
• Must demonstrate proficiency to work on industrial and heavy duty equipment, hydraulic, powertrain, diesel and gasoline fuel, accessory and cooling systems.
• Knowledge of industrial and heavy equipment shop safety rules, procedures, and equipment.
• Knowledge of technical terms used in light and heavy equipment repairs.
• Skill in the use of electrical, electronic, hydraulic and mechanical test equipment and devices.
• Skill in troubleshooting and repairing gas, diesel and hybrid engines and transmissions, hydraulic and electrical systems, diesel fuel and engine management systems.
• Skill in using online and paper maintenance repair and parts manuals to assist in maintenance repair.
• Skill in the use and care of hand and power tools.
• Ability to safely operate vehicles and equipment with onboard systems to test and troubleshoot for proper operation of integral or installed systems before and after maintenance.
• Ability to have predictable and reliable attendance.
• Ability to work in a team environment and independently.
• Ability to perform work and duties on various shifts.
• Demonstrated knowledge to troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, electrical systems, chassis and powertrain systems.
• Demonstrated knowledge to navigate the MS Windows environment and to operate and perform research on a computer.

THE MOST COMPETITIVE CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS:
• Journey status in heavy duty construction equipment, diesel and medium fleet automotive repair and maintenance.
OR
• Two (2) years of experience in heavy duty construction equipment and medium fleet and automotive repair and maintenance with participation in a two (2) year Vocational, Military or Community College diesel or automotive mechanics program or recognized apprenticeship.
OR
• Any combination of education and experience that provides the candidates with the knowledge and skills set forth above.
• Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) Master Certification desired.
• Experience on repair & maintenance of construction equipment (i.e. track vehicles, dozers, front end loaders, backhoes, track hoe, etc.)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Possession of a valid Washington State Driver's License.
• Possession of either a valid Washington State Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with current Medical Card upon hire or the ability to obtain such License within six (6) months of employment.
• Successful candidate must provide his or her own tool kit consisting of standard and metric, open end and socket wrenches. Open end wrenches must be standard size 1/4" through 1-1/4", metric size 6 mm through 22 mm. Socket sets 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" drive, standard size 1/4" through 1-1/4", metric size 6 mm through 22 mm. Various pliers, screwdrivers and other hand tools required to perform the essential function of the job must be part of the kit.
• Successful candidate must obtain First Aid and CPR certification within six (6) months after start of employment.
• Successful candidate will be required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and, subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow up testing as position is defined as safety sensitive.
• Successful candidate will be required to pass a physical examination.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon satisfactory drug testing, physical examination and verification of a valid Washington State Driver's License, valid Washington State Class B Commercial Driver's License with current Medical Card, and satisfactory supervisor level reference checks.
