  • Contract Labor at Medical Weight Loss clinic with over 30 years of experience
  • 2-3 Hour shifts a few days a week
  • Position available in Baton Rouge, Prairieville, and Houma locations
  • Company with 9 locations - can work one location or multiple

Physician Roles and Responsibilities

  • Patient Evaluations/ Prescribing Medication
    • Evaluate patients’ medical history and paperwork to determine whether appetite suppressant medication is safe for patient use during weight loss journey.
      • Review blood pressure readings in chart and BP history
      • Check current medications being taken by patient and ensure there are no contraindications (Prescription Monitoring Program Data (PMPs) will be pulled for every patient prior to their visit and noted in patient chart – if PMP is unclear, you generally will not see that patient as the Aspen staff will call and alert them ahead of time.)
      • Evaluate patient’s current weight and fat percent in chart and their weight loss goal
    • If medication is deemed safe, determine which medication is best suited for patient based on their medical history, other medication usage, schedule, appetite level, etc.
      • Phentermine 37.5 mg #30 1x/d is the most commonly prescribed medication due to its long termed safe, effective, affordable nature – brand name Adipex-P is used too, but is ~$50/mo vs Phentermine is ~$15 which patients prefer and find just as effective. Patients generally take 1 tablet in the morning or ½ in the morning and ½ around mid-day.
      • The second most commonly prescribed medication is Diethylpropion (Generic Tenuate) 25 mg #90 3x/d which is very mild or Diethylpropion 75 mg #30 which is an extended release and less of a stimulant than the Phentermine (good for patients who don’t like stimulants/ excess energy). Both mg’s are ~$25-30.
      • Benzphetamine (generic Didrex) 50 mg #90 3x/d is a Schedule III drug and can only be prescribed 3x per year and we ask that you notate 1,2,3 in the patient chart next to each Rx written during a year period. It ranges from ~$70-90 and is less commonly prescribed for that reason.
      • Other medications that are prescribed: Phendimetrazine (generic Bontril) 35 mg #90 3x/d can be a substitute for any patient who doesn’t like the Phentermine or Tenuate, or a patient switching off Didrex. Newer medications like Contrave, Belviq, or Qysmia can be prescribed, but are generally more expensive (~$200-400) and patients tend to prefer and find the older medications more effective.
      • The Aspen Clinic staff will provide all patients with a prescription discount card at check out and direct patients to the pharmacies with the best cost for each prescription.
      • All prescriptions are written for a one month period with no refills authorized. We want the patients to come in monthly to be evaluated by the physician and staff.
    • If patient does not medically qualify for a prescription, we ask that you encourage them to still follow the nutritional program and direct them to discuss other non-medical options with the Aspen Clinic staff. Ensure them that weight loss is still possible without the medication.
