The Juvenile Corrections Specialist
This is a regular full-time position to perform professional supervision of juveniles in a secure custody facility. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: providing counseling, stabilization, and guidance for juveniles with behavioral and mental health challenges, performing intakes, preparation of required paperwork/documentation, attending to daily needs of juveniles, and other duties as assigned/required. Yamhill County Juvenile Corrections Division is responsible for complying with the Federal Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA 42 U.S.C. 1997). PREA prohibits the Yamhill County Juvenile Corrections Division from hiring, promoting, or contracting with anyone (that will have direct contact with residents) who has engaged in, been convicted of, or been civilly or administratively adjudicated for engaging in sexual abuse in confinement settings.

The Benefits
Health coverage - Group medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage is available for the entire family. For the 2021- 2022 plan year, the County will pay 96% of the monthly premium and employees will pay 4% ($71.57 per month) for the Base Plan. With this plan, employees are eligible for a $125 a month contribution into an HRA VEBA account. Buy-up plans are also available.
Retirement - PERS (Public Employee Retirement System) contribution is 100% employer funded, which includes both contribution to PERS pension and IAP accounts (IAP contribution is 6% of salary).
Short-Term Disability – 100% County paid.
Life insurance - $6,000 for employee/$2,000 for spouse and children – 100% County Paid.
Vacation/Sick Leave - Flexible Earned Time (FET) is a combination of vacation and sick leave. To start, employees earn 12.38 hours per month and future accruals increase based on years of service. After a year of service and depending on FET balance, employees may sell-back up to 40 hours of FET per year.

 

The Qualifications
The position requires graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in
behavioral sciences, corrections, or juvenile justice and two (2) years’ experience in juvenile corrections,
counseling, probation, or coaching ages 12-18. Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education experience and/ or training relevant to the position will ensures the ability to perform the work will be considered. Applicants must be 21 years of age, possess a Class C Oregon driver’s license (or have the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire) and have an acceptable driving record. All applicants are subject to additional pre-employment check(s) such as fingerprint based criminal records check, pre-employment drug screening and/or education verification. Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR/First Aid Certification within 30 days of hire date is required.

 

The Candidate
The successful candidate will have an understanding of adolescent behavior and skills in de-escalation techniques, nonphysical intervention, and defensive tactics in addition to having knowledge, experience, or training in supervising, coaching, and/or mentoring youth, working directly with juveniles (ages 12-18) in a residential treatment, group home, or corrections environment. Other requirements include excellent skills in organization, paperwork/case management, and communication – both verbally and in writing. They must be dependable, organized, self-directed, detail-oriented, and possess the ability to interact with others in a courteous and appropriate professional manner, with knowledge/skill in modern office practices and computer skills.
