Diversity & Inclusion are at the core of our mission to strengthen and empower the communities we serve.

Do you love to eat? Do you love to share your discoveries about diverse cuisines and cultures? Do you believe — as we do! — that New Jersey’s growing culinary scene in one of the most vibrant in the country?

NJ Advance Media (NJ.com and The Star-Ledger newspaper) is looking for a passionate journalist to join our award-winning Topics Team as a food and culture reporter.

As New Jersey’s largest media source, NJAM is committed to bolstering its food and culture report with stories spotlighting the state’s diverse restaurant scene, as well as those illuminating distinct New Jersey culture.  We are particularly interested in a journalist who can help us broaden our coverage to reach underserved communities, and help identify and elevate restaurants and food trends in these communities.  We are also interested in a reporter who understands local culture and can write candidly (and with some humor) about our state and the bonds we share.

The journalist in this position will pitch, visit and report upon people and businesses with interesting stories to tell, and whose food and drinks connect them to their communities. After all, food stories are people stories, too. News and trend pieces, reviews, feature interviews, lists, and projects would all be expected, as well as collaboration with reporters on our food team and beyond.

Some non-food-related stories bound to New Jersey trends - viral moments, New Jersey people making national pop culture news and more are on the table — may be pitched and assigned as well.

For this position, we are looking for a candidate with:

  • A degree in journalism or communications or equivalent education and work experience with a proven ability in journalism reporting and writing
  • A minimum of two years in journalism with a proven ability in reporting and writing required, preferably including experience in food and dining
  • Possession of a clear and engaging writing style
  • An ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately
  • A sound understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
  • Experience using social media to find stories and promote content
  • An understanding of the methods and tools used to deliver content across a variety of platforms
  • An ability to work collaboratively with editors
  • Fluency in languages other than English, particularly in Spanish, is preferred
