Job Description
The Lab Assistant is primarily responsible for assisting with the supervision of aviation students in the laboratory environment to ensure successful completion of class outcomes in a safe environment. This is a non-teaching position. Additionally, this individual is required to ensure all equipment, tooling, and expendable supplies are in place and sufficient for the lab requirements. During class sessions, the individual must have the technical acumen to ensure the equipment used in laboratory is operational. The individual must meet Transportation Security Administration (TSA) badging requirements to function in the Airport Operating Area at Piedmont Triad International (PTI) airport.
Duties/Functions
• In coordination with the faculty of record, provide supervision to Aviation Systems Technology students during laboratory sessions.
• Audit tooling, equipment, and facilities before and after all lab sessions to ensure success.
• Audit equipment maintenance logs daily, address as required. Enforce GTCC Aviation policy on equipment maintenance logs with faculty and students.
• Follow up on all reported equipment failure, damage, and repair needs after lab session in accordance with department procedure.
• Escalate equipment repair or replacement needs to leadership when resources or requirements are outside of the employees’s ability.
• Maintain a neat and orderly lab or shop at all times.
• Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

• Maintain equipment and audit records.
• Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education Required
- High School Diploma or GED with valid Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Mechanics Certificate with Airframe and Power plant ratings
-Ability to qualify for and maintain a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Airport Operating Area (AOA) badge at Piedmont Triad International (PTI) airport
Education Preferred
-Associate’s degree in Aviation Maintenance from a regionally accredited institution.
-Non-Destructive Testing and Composite Repair Certification
Experience Required
-Three years of recent industry experience in aviation maintenance.
-Experience maintaining and troubleshooting aviation equipment.
Experience Preferred
-Greater than three years of recent industry experience in aviation maintenance.
-Lab/shop experience in an aviation maintenance program.
KSA Required

Specific Departmental Requirements:
1. The individual must meet TSA badging requirements to function in the Airport Operating Area at Piedmont Triad International (PTI) airport.
2. Individual must be able to safely operate aircraft and aircraft systems.
Physical Demands
1. May include supporting day and evening and on multiple campuses
2. Position may require standing for extended periods of time, stooping, walking, climbing, and bending to supervise students in confined areas inside, underneath, and on top of aircraft, as well as on elevated work stands and platforms.
3. Exposure to hazardous materials is possible and will require safe handling, use and disposal. Some classes require using flammable and/or inert high pressure gases, and using high pressure hydraulic equipment.
4. Lifting, and the positioning of heavy equipment in preparation for classes and labs is required.
5. Work may be required in an environment that varies from hot to cold (seasonal), which can be both noisy and dusty, and require standing for lengthy periods.
6. Criminal history checks, with acceptable results, are required.
