Summary

The King County Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) has a staffing need for an experienced and technically proficient Industrial Lubrication Systems Specialist.  


The responsibilities of this classification include developing, implementing and managing an in-depth preventive-maintenance industrial lubrication system for various pumps, motors, compressors, hydraulic systems and specialized wastewater machinery.


WHO MAY APPLY:  This position is open to all qualified S.E.I.U., Wastewater Local 925 candidates.  This posting may be used to establish a list of qualified candidates for any Career Service, Special Duty Assignment or Term Limited Temporary openings in the following six months. 

WORK LOCATION:  South Treatment Plant — 1200 Monster Road SW, Renton WA.  
 

WORK SCHEDULE:  The treatment plants are operated 24/7.  This position works a 4 day/10 hours per day schedule. Candidates must be available to work any assigned schedule, and be able to work in emergency situations and be part of an on-call standby rotation. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. 

Job Duties

  • Develop, manage and maintain a proactive lubrication program; Develop lubrication schedules and routes by using machinery trend analysis and technical data; Establish schedules for shutdowns and coordinate with other maintenance and operations staff.
  • Develop lubrication maintenance procedures using blueprints, engineering drawings, operations and maintenance manuals, vendor data, catalogs and as-built drawings.
  • Modify machinery lubrication and filtration systems after thorough research of new technology; analyze and report on the cost-effectiveness of these modifications. Troubleshoot and isolate abnormal noise, vibrations and temperature increases in bearings through sensory analysis and various preventive maintenance techniques.
  • Process oil samples from various lubrication and hydraulic systems for analysis; interpret and update oil analysis reports and act on the proper lubrication response for a particular contaminant. Select and consolidate appropriate lubricants to enhance industrial machinery operation. Maintain multiple oil supply rooms and satellite waste oil collection sites in accordance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations.  Inventory and order lubricants.
  • Operate overhead cranes and forklifts to remove, maintain and install multi-ton industrial machinery using safe rigging techniques.
  • Work with other mechanical staff to perform maintenance or essential reports to reduce machine downtime and to determine the root cause of failure through established analysis procedures.
  • Act as subject matter expert on lubrication. Train other staff in proper industrial lubrication techniques and principles. Perform lubrication duties on machinery that include oil servicing, oil sampling, greasing, oil changes and filter changes and oil flow rate adjustment; Perform other mechanical preventative maintenance tasks such as changing and adjusting belts, installing piping systems associated with lubrication systems, installing grease fittings, oil drains, oil fill systems and oil level sight-glasses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Knowledge of and the ability to apply fundamentals of hydraulic theory and industrial applications
  • Knowledge of the application of predictive and preventive maintenance techniques and their effects on equipment performance
  • Knowledge of bearings, pumps, gearboxes, compressors and other related heavy industrial machinery
  • Knowledge of the characteristics and use of various oils and lubricants including proper handling, storage, disposal and reactivity with other chemicals including handling and disposal of hazardous wastes; Knowledge of lubricant storage and handling and related fire codes
  • Knowledge of the application of the industrial safety procedures and standards for occupational hazards and the use of protective safety equipment associated with operating heavy industrial machinery
  • Skill in identifying, troubleshooting and analyzing defective bearings by machinery sounds, and temperature increases; Demonstrated skill in the application of industrial mechanical maintenance techniques and principles; Demonstrated skill in the application of pipefitting and piping systems techniques and principles
  • Skill in the use of power and hand tools; Demonstrated skill in operating equipment associated with overhead rigging and lifting, material handling and communication equipment
  • Skill in using a computer and associated software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
  • Communication skills. Skill in establishing and maintaining a working relationship with a diverse group of individuals from varying occupations and working in a team environment
