Job Summary

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA), possessing advanced knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and utilizing extensive patient assessment skills, collaborates with all health team members to ensure the most optimal patient outcome. Performs all activities at an expanded level of perioperative nursing practice executed within the context of the nursing process. Intra-operatively, the RNFA actively assists the surgeon, performing observable, technical behaviors (cognitive, psycho motor, and affective) based on an extensive body of scientific knowledge, as specified in the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Core Curriculum for the RNFA.

Essential Functions

  • Assesses, monitors, develops and maintains individualized patient plan of care with the patient and consistent with patient/family changing needs, and goals and reflecting the full scope of nursing practice. Delivers care in a manner that is culturally sensitive and preserves patient autonomy, dignity and rights. Identifies, facilitates, and evaluates outcomes of nursing care for an individual patient or group of patients. Documents patient care accurately and acts as a patient/family advocate.
  • Initiates patient discharge planning at initial patient contact and facilitates a smooth transition to the next point of service. Ensures that required documentation is performed in accurate and timely manner.
  • Provides evidence-based patient care consistent with plan and guidelines of care, physician’s orders and in compliance with health system policies, procedures and American Nurses Association (ANA)/regulatory standards. Communicates with other members of the health care team in order to ensure continuity of care.
  • Evaluates patient’s and families educational needs and develops and implements appropriate teaching strategies or makes appropriate referrals. (SHGR)
  • Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Formulates decisions and actions based on ethical principles, using the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide practice. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data.
  • Articulates the professional nursing role to the patient, family and health team members. Assumes an autonomous leadership role and delegates appropriately to support employees to facilitate safe, quality care in a timely, cost-effective manner.
  • Intra-operatively, actively and independently (the intern is under the supervision of a preceptor), assists the surgeon, performing observable, technical behaviors, included, but not limited to, patient positioning, skin preparation, tissue handling, wound exposure, hemostasis and wound closure. The intern is under the supervision of a preceptor and will work towards independence by completing all RNFA competencies.

Qualifications
  • Required Bachelor's Degree in Nursing must be obtained within 7 years for those who start in this RN role on or after January 1, 2013 (SHWM); within 7 years for those who start in this RN role on or after January 1, 2017 (Gerber, Pennock, Ludington); within 7 years for those who start in this RN role on or after February 22, 2016 (Reed City, Big Rapids); within 7 years for those who start in this RN role between February 1, 2013 and December 31, 2016 (United and Kelsey)
  • Required Associate's Degree Nursing
  • Successful completion of a competency-based orientation Required
  • 2 years of relevant experience in a perioperative nursing department (SH Grand Rapids Required) Preferred
  • LIC-Registered Nurse (RN) - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire required
  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association 90 Days required Or
  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross 90 Days required
  • CRT-Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - AHA American Heart Association 90 Days required
  • CRT-Nurse in OR (CNOR) - AORN Association of perioOperative Registered Nurses Meijer Heart Center and Regional Hospitals 1 Year required Or
  • CRT-Nurse in OR (CNOR) - CCI Competency and Credentialing Institute 1 Year required
  • CRT-RN First Assist, Certified (CRNFA) - AORN Association of perioOperative Registered Nurses Meijer Heart Center and Regional Hospitals 2 Yrs required Or
  • CRT-RN First Assist, Certified (CRNFA) - NASC National Assistant at Surgery Certification Meijer Heart Center and Regional Hospitals 2 Yrs required Or
  • CRT-Surgical Assistant, Certified (CSA) - NBSTSA National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting 2 Yrs required
