Responsible for assisting physicians with application and monitoring of various orthopedic devices on all patients that require this service and maintains the overall operation of the cast room. Coordinates the ordering and maintenance of equipment and supplies, in coordination with the Director and Clinical Coordinator. Acts as an educational resource regarding orthopedic equipment.

Essential Functions

  • Makes daily rounds to check on orthopedic patients with orthopedic devices to monitor proper apparatus application / equipment functioning and document findings.
  • Assists physicians with application and removal of casts and traction apparatuses.
  • Communicates and collaborates with other members of the health care team.
  • Monitors and maintains appropriate equipment / supply inventory and maintains a system for tracking equipment / supply costs.
  • Coordinates equipment purchases, matching specifications with identified unit needs. Compares cost, quality, and dependability factors and makes recommendations for purchase to the Director and / or Clinical Manager.
  • Assists unit staff when available.
  • Plans and provides educational in-services pertaining to correct use of orthopedic devices under the direction of the Staff Educator.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences, seminars and the like.
  • Demonstrates by attitude and action recognition of the importance of interaction with co-workers. Communicates effectively and respectfully with co-workers and staff of other affiliates. Works as a team member helping others as needed to contribute to the overall success of Spectrum Health.

  • Ensures that services are provided in accordance with state and Federal regulations, organizational policy, and accreditation / compliance requirements.
  • Performs such individual assignments as management may direct. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships within the organization. Provides information to senior levels of management on the implication of policies and procedures being formulated and recommends specific action.
  • Engages in continuous study of the entire professional field, including best practices, to maintain the professional competence, knowledge, and skills necessary for the satisfactory performance of all assigned responsibilities. Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements.
  • Ensures that required documentation for activities within areas of responsibility is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of hospital safety and infection control policies

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • CRT - CPR - AHA American Heart Association required within 90 days
Preferred Qualifications
  • Pediatric Orthopedic Technician experience
