Summary

The Federal Way Public Health Family Planning Clinic is looking for a skilled, motivated and enthusiastic Medical Assistant who is committed to a team approach, serving men, women and teens to provide high quality sexual and reproductive health and education services.
The Medical Assistant works as a paraprofessional performing delegated patient care functions under the clinical direction of an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) and under the supervision of a Personal Health Services Supervisor (PHSS) or site manager.

Medical Assistants work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinic team that interacts with the public and community partners, while delivering quality healthcare services to racially, ethnically, and socio economically diverse populations. Medical Assistants perform administrative support duties, conduct education and outreach activities, research various topics and information, conduct assessments, and are expected to regularly adapt their role/tasks in order to maximize clinic efficiency and flow.

The primary focus of this position is providing family planning care including: birth control, options counseling, abortion referrals, and STD diagnosis and treatment to patients. Additional duties vary and can include: immunizations, phlebotomy, medication administration, injections, and data entry into tracking system.

Job Duties

  • Assist providers with patient care and coordinate efficient clinic flow by promptly rooming patients.
  • As directed by ARNP, perform and process blood draws, administer medication and collect specimens.
  • Interview and accurately record client's medical, dietary, social history, anthropometric and lab results, and accurately enter patient information into electronic health record, health information tracking systems, and chronic disease registries.
  • Provide health care education regarding reproductive health, emergency contraception and pregnancy options, including abortion referral through individual instruction and written materials to clinic clients.
  • As directed by ARNP, phone in prescriptions to pharmacies, schedule follow­-up appointments and refer patients for specialty and/or follow-­up care as needed.
  • Monitor, request, stock and clean routine clinic supplies, maintain safety and cleanliness of examination/treatment rooms and laboratory areas. This may include some bending, lifting, reaching, stooping and moving objects weighing 35 pounds.
  • Utilize clinic practice management software to assist with scheduling, registering and checking in patients for appointments.
  • Attend training and respond to emergency situations within the clinic supporting health care providers and emergency personnel.
  • Perform pre-visit planning activities, attend huddles 
  • Assist with procedures 
  • Administer vaccines, and single dose medications via the following routes;
  • oral, subcutaneous, intradermal, intramuscular, intranasal.
  • Perform CLIA waived lab tests
  • Provide coverage for other MA absences
  • Properly donning and doffing PPE

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills


  • The ability to do basic mathematics including basic calculations, convert fractions and decimals, graph anthropometrics, and all with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Knowledge of Medical Assistant skills including phlebotomy and related laboratory and clinical procedures, medical terminology, vital signs and immunizations.
  • Knowledge of asepsis and universal precautions, State and Federal guidelines regarding laboratory safety, handling and/or disposing of bio­hazards and specimens.
  • The ability to engage and educate clients on health care maintenance and prevention.
  • The ability to effectively communicate (oral and written) including with clients, co-workers, supervisors, health care providers and the public.
  • The ability to effectively communicate with non­-English speaking clients utilizing interpreters when necessary.
  • The ability to effectively collaborate in a team environment.
  • The ability to rapidly set priorities in a changing environment, identify problems, make decisions within the scope of the position, implement appropriate actions or solutions, and seek additional information when necessary.
  • The ability to successfully multitask in a fast paced environment.
  • Knowledge of laws governing health care including HIPAA, the handling of confidential information, and understanding of Child Protective Services mandates.
  • Be familiar with medical record­keeping; utilizing patient tracking registries.
  • The ability to accurately enter data into computerized systems.
  • The physical ability and sufficient manual dexterity to perform the requisite health care services with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to effectively deal with change; able to be flexible and adaptable; able to gather information and try different ideas to make things work.
  • Relates well with diverse personality types; treats everyone fairly and equitably.
  • Able to work with a multi-disciplinary team that interacts with the public and community partners while delivering quality healthcare services to racially, ethnically and socio-economically diverse populations.
  • Ability to talk to others with ease; listen attentively; be receptive to what others have to say.
  • Must have good attendance history
  • Desire to work with vulnerable populations

Requirements:
  • Documentation of current Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification with AED training required at time of hire. CPR/AED Heartsaver courses do not meet this requirement. 
  • The selected candidate will be required to pass a thorough background investigation.

  • Employees are required to adhere to OSHA/WISHA guidelines including but not limited to completing their mandatory trainings on time. 
  • Must have Medical Assistant Certification with Washington Department of Health

Desired Qualifications:
  • Family Planning/Gynecology knowledge, skills, and experience is desired.
  • Experience interviewing clients to obtain their medical, dietary, and social history.
  • Experience using EPIC electronic health record.
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable, and willing to attempt creative solutions.
  • Bilingual/Bicultural

Work Schedule: This is a Term Limited Temporary/Special Duty Assignment, 0.8 to 1.0 FTE (32 to 40 hours per week). This position has a regular schedule of Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00p.m. However, in an effort to meet our clients' needs, this position will be required to work outside these hours and may include Saturday hours.
 
Work Location: This position will primarily work at the Federal Way Public Health Center located at 33431 13th Pl. S., Federal Way, 98003. However, in an effort to meet our clients' needs, this position will be required to work at various Public Health Centers and sites throughout King County.
