Summary

 

The Deputy Director is responsible for managing daily operations and administrative functions of the King County Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), also known as the Superior Court Clerk’s Office. In addition to operations, the incumbent provides support and consultation to the Director (County Clerk) in creating and managing the department’s budget, overseeing the human resource functions of the department and interpreting and implementing polices, rules, and laws that impact the Clerk’s Office.

The Clerk's Office performs a variety of services for the Court, litigants and the general public, including: management of Superior Court case records, in-court staffing for proceedings and exhibit processing, management of financial services and trust funds related to superior court cases, and assisting customers obtain copies, file paperwork, and get the information they need to navigate the court process.

WORK LOCATION: This position will be based at the King County Courthouse, 516 3rd Ave, Room E609, Seattle, WA; but will travel to Maleng Regional Justice Center located at 401 4th Ave N Room 2C, Kent, WA; or the Juvenile Clerk's Office located at 1211 East Alder St., Seattle, WA as needed.
 
WORK SCHEDULE: This position works a 40-hour workweek, typically 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Job Duties

This position will be responsible for a variety of tasks including but not limited to those listed below: 

Oversee operations of DJA to ensure effective and efficient achievement of the organization's  goals and objectives.

Serve as liaison between DJA and other King County departments and agencies.

Provide guidance to division directors on policies and operations.

Direct the work of the HR Manager in their work in personnel matters and negotiations with collective bargaining units. Maintain clear communications and relationships with the King County Human Resource Department.

 

Supervise professional staff working out of the Director’s Office. Staff are program/project managers who perform a variety of tasks related to data collection and analysis, website management, lean process reviews, finance work, CLE development, and a multitude of other duties that support the overall administration of the Department.

Prepare DJA’s annual budget for approval by Director. Oversee and monitor departmental budget, including revenue collection and expenditures. Analyze annual departmental needs, make budget recommendations and advocate for the resources needed by the department.

Provide direction and input in determining job responsibilities, methods, and performance standards for DJA’s senior management team. Establish work objectives and recommendations for departmental changes.

Serve as Acting Director in the Director's absence; make decisions and provide overall direction and guidance for all employees. 

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

A college degree in judicial administration, public administration, business administration or a similar area, plus at least five years’ experience in public administration, program management and supervision of staff in a public sector agency.  Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the duties described will be considered.

  • Budgeting and strategic planning techniques and principles
  • Organizational planning and operational management
  • Team building and organizational goal setting
  • Policy development

Successful candidates must have strong diplomatic, listening, advocacy and collaboration skills, and an unwavering commitment to equity and social justice.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

A graduate degree in judicial administration or business administration.
